Thanks for working on this, but a note about:
I would like to add something visual like M120 and hide the details of the current KCM fonts behind a "expert settings" tab or similar.
Fix empty function
From a short test: the cursor is always the default cursor on TabBox but not above it. Changing the cursor to some other icon to indicate a click closes the TabBox could be done, but I believe wouldn't look good. Would like to close this task therefore.
Thank you!
I see the problem you are solving, but this is a less optimal solution.
This way the user must change the size with every launch of the app, and this is if he knows how to :) (no to mention he should change the size of both the boxes to match, or it will be ugly looking)
A solution that is used in Linux version is much better (a font setting)
5.8.81 as it's master no 5.8 branch which is closed now.
Because of risk of regressions abandoned. Pointer constraint deactivation on TabBox invocation was alternatively changed to be done explicitly through f0ba436c724e.
thank you again for your time, to test this patch.

As an aside, I'd probably like this to end up being remembered between sessions, but this no different to the current state, and so outside the scope of this patch. As a default setting, yup, sorting by Rating definitely makes better sense than Newest :) (Newest would make better sense for people who look regularly, but Rating is definitely the best first-run thing, and that's the experience we're trying to improve - we can get to remembering the state later on, if everybody else agrees that that's something we want to do)
There does not seem to be any way to override auto-key-retrieve programatically => documentation issue.
About master: just a minor conflict in pane.h. Here's a version of the commit that will apply to master: http://www.davidfaure.fr/2018/0001-KMail-fix-selecting-a-favorite-that-is-filtered-out-.patch
In principle, this would really want to go via the designers, but at the same time it does seem that this was what was originally intended anyway. Shippit :)
Remove string ref in return.

In this case there does not seem to be lots of active development, so perhaps just posting a Diff and tagging the contributors of the last few patches (Kai and Andreas) is better than opening a bug or asking others to solve the issue for us. (Let me know if I should help, IOW if I was asking too much from you ;)
Fix tab and replace by spaces
Center 100% zoom to current cursor position
You can either update this or create new revision.

Interesting. Is this really working for you without the patches? For me, even middle-clicking with a KDE4-based Gwenview centers instead of respecting the mouse position.
We can't apply on master
Increase CMakeLists.txt version as you add new api
