Good to know, I had tried also with 15min slots but iirc there are events that start or end at time-frames such as XX:50, so that was an issue if we were going for accuracy.

I had a quick go at this on LibreOffice Writer using a table, but to fit the 5min time-slots between 0830 and 1900 on an A5 page in landscape mode, the letters need to be 2.5 in size, which means really tiny. Would that work? Here's a draft sample.

I suggest using a 24h format for the clock to correspond to international standards. For the timezones, I would just use an indication of the time in UTC next to the city, for example, Berlin: UTC+2.

I suggest sending an SMS over calling. It's less intrusive, gives people a chance to respond at their own time and will probably cost less also. =)

I really like the announcement @jriddell shared. What I would suggest as an improvement is making sure that the topics that are mentioned in the introduction are then further expanded in the sections that follow and that the topics that are expanded in those sections are all mentioned in the introduction.

We can choose any topic from the sub-tasks listed on the overarching Onboarding Goal task. I will be adding some more sub-tasks there in the following days (like improving documentation, gathering feedback etc). Feel free to leave a comment there if you came up with anything that needs to be tackled and is not mentioned already.

When I am converting bullet points into paragraphs, I try to group them by common subjects. For example several bullet points might all be about full screen mode, others are about usability fixes or about SVG images.

Where possible, it would be great if we could get some screenshots/gifs of the cool new features like we had for the 17.12.0 announcement.

Regarding the venue, the people running it were friendly and willing to help us. What I remember is the heating issue. If we want to use this place again in the future, we should ask for another room or hold the event at a warmer time of the year.

I've been calling for a website rework as part of the Onboarding Goal as well, so I'm glad to see this discussion. The Getting Involved page would definitely benefit from such a restructure.

Not sure where to find it and how it can be used, but during FOSDEM2018 people from FSFE came over to the KDE booth and asked to take a photo of us holding paper hearts with the 4 freedoms (use, study, share, improve) and a sign, on which @rempt wrote "I love all my users".

Hi everyone, I feel bad for being quiet over the last couple of weeks. Lots of changes happening in Jan-Feb for me, and also FOSDEM and the KDE Promo sprint are coming up. I'll try to push this goal forward in a consistent way once all these have passed.

@kossebau regarding the images, a screenshot representative of what the plugin does/how it helps users/devs should be fine imo. Feel free to update the link to the new image directly on the pad. 9. Linking any possible goals to KDE community's actions.

The ambitious goal here is to improve the onboarding process for all types of contributors. If we succeed, everyone interested in contributing to KDE should have a clear and supportive path to follow. Of course coders are at the heart of KDE and what it does and lots of this work will inevitably go into that. The way I see it, "making it easy to build something and patch it" should be the case/aim for all types of contributions. =)

Lots of great suggestions here, I will try to add the ideas from the comments and the video asap. Of course, feel free to edit the initial post directly and include them yourself. =)

On one hand, having people with these skills interested in contributing could potentially increase the chances of this proposal being voted. But I would be careful in explaining that the voting is still pending.

Yup, totally agree with merging as these two obviously overlap. Am just not sure if and how merging can be done through phabricator without all the current comments being lost.

I think we should either try to improve on that work or add more software as you suggested (Krita, Digikam, Okular, kdenlive, coding with Qt/frameworks, etc.)
And of course concentrate all of this knowledge in one place and make it KDE official. We can put it in Youtube also, but it should be under the same 'user'. So that people will be able to find it all in one place.

These are indeed educational videos, thanks for sharing. And yes, that is the idea, have all these under the KDE umbrella. We could even reach out to people that already put work into this, and ask if they are willing to help in this effort.

What worries me a bit, is that the software sometimes changes so rapidly that the current version might look different from that which is shown on our videos. For that matter, the real-world courses are always up-to-date, But they too have drawback as they are constrained by time and space (which the online courses don't). Anyway our most important goal is increasing the number of power-users no matter how.

Yes, for videos it is kind of an issue redoing the whole thing once something changes. Annotations could be inserted though to inform people of minor changes. And perhaps the videos could be reviewed periodically to check they are still relevant.

Here are some further thoughts I've made on this:

@navarromorales Mentoring is indeed a very important aspect of improving the contribution process and it can help solving issues like the ones you describe.

What about the possibility of offering these courses online the way Coursera/Edx do it? This way everything can be accessible always by people across the world.
