I've improved the texts a bit (see merge request), removing some paragraphs as I saw fit.
In T11335#195599, @ognarb wrote:For the news page, the content can be extracted and converted in markdown with pandoc. Do you know where I can find the source of the current website?
It's on KDE's svn server: svn+ssh://svn@svn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/www/sites/kphotoalbum
Apart from that, I currently have no idea (yet) how that Jekyll thingy works … but probably, the existing PHP code of the news page could be used here?!
Unsplash is not okay :(
The KPA demo database could also be used, to be accessed via kphotoalbum --demo. The images are also a bit dated, but I think we won't have a copyright problem with it.
@ognarb Okay.

And how could i write this in the Template?. Is there a Bootstrap class for the same layout as on the site?: https://www.kphotoalbum.org/documentation/3minutetour/
@tleupold Okay. But i reeaalllyyy have no idea, how i can convert the news site...
I never used KPhotoAlbum, but it looks like very similar to Gwenview. You can view a images in KPA and Gwenview.
Like you can view files with LibreOffice Writer's "open" dialog and Dolphin.
It's very nice that somebody volunteers to rework the site. It's definitely dated. I cared about it the last few years, but I only worked on it under the hood and never touched the design … the most important thing is the News section I think where we announce releases etc. The "Getting involved" part is nice when it comes to the active and former developers, but I don't know if we need the rest here. Perhaps, one should simply advice somebody who wants to join us (a rare case ;-) to log in on our Freenode channel and simply talk with (one of) us. Same for "Testimonials", I'm not sure if we need this. As of "Documentation", I think the only really relevant thing is the "3 Minute Tour" to show what we have/can do, but it definitely needs a makeover. The rest can probably be linked, but the wiki stuff on KDE's servers is most probably also a bit out of date (we simply lack the manpower …)

Exactly! :). I see no Reason to stop supporting KPA.

It seems like KPhotoAlbum is made for a different usecase than gwenview. KPhotoAlbum seems more about managing and tagging photos than gwenview, which is more like a basic viewer with a few editing features.
Why do KDE need to support the old KPhotoAlbum when we have a modern Gwenview? Let's just stop supporting KPhotoAlbum.

The text will need some minor correction. For example the default categories were: Persons, Locations, and Keywords and are now Event, Places, People and Token.
@johanneszarl okay, i will do it.
@simonkr Yes, deleting it is ok from my point of view.
@johanneszarl Okay, so is it okay for you when i delete the page also from the Repository?. And whats about the 3minutetour Page?: https://www.kphotoalbum.org/documentation/3minutetour/

Did you check whether all the (relevant) features provided by the current set of KIPI Plugins are provided by Purpose plugins?

@ngraham: I wasn't aware that gwenview ships some KIPI plugins of its own, but here (Debian sid), the remaining KIPI export plugins are still listed in gwenview.

Gwenview has a way to install the Kipi plugins that's been semi-broken for years so I doubt there are many or any users left. Spectacle shows them if already installed, but has no way to install them. Don't know about KPhotoAlbum. The last I checked, many of the Kipi plugins didn't actually work. And some are now redundant, e.g. Purpose can send via email too.

Kipi is dead. Long live purpose!
Feb 25 2019
To the best of my knowledge Gwenview doesn't use Purpose. I once looked into adding it since it would make sense.
Feb 24 2019
Spectacle can use both purpose and kipi-plugins in its Export menu/button.

Update: there's now DB::UIDelegate which helps breaking dependencies on MainWindow/KMessageBox.

I've implemented a proof-of-concept for something similar in the branch feature/categoryDates: In this branch, the date range for categories is displayed, and it is possible to sort by start-date...

As it turned out, support for Qt < 5.8 has been dropped intentionally.

So far, I'm explicitly vague - I've been sitting with Nate earlier today and he mentioned that gwenview could possibly improve in the use-case "tagging" and suggested that I should just open a task if I'm interested.
Hi, thanks for reaching out.
Jul 13 2018
Well I actually didn't see the line above at first. Thanks for the correction

Oh dear, you're right. Should've looked at the whole picture...
Also note the big elephant in the room: the typo is not in the British English translation, but in the original text...
I just pushed 812910752712f185e5ef19bf4786346217232475 to fix it, which will invalidate all the translations (so Steve will notice it by tomorrow).
I've forwarded the information to the translator...
@pino Thanks for the hint - I wasn't aware that the translations in git are a one-way street...
Note that translations are handled by an automatic system (informally called "scripty") that extracts messages from all the translatable resources, like messages in the applications/libraries, and also strings in .desktop (and alike), and .appdata.xml files.
As such, editing translations directly is not a good idea, and indeed scripty reverted to the string actually in the en_GB translation the day after this commit.
Please contact the British English team, or the translator directly:
https://websvn.kde.org/trunk/l10n-kf5/en_GB/messages/extragear-graphics/org.kde.kphotoalbum.appdata.po?view=markup
Sure thing - ship it!
Can you approve the revision so I can close it ?

Pushed it finally. Thanks again :-)
So … I just tried to manually commit your patch (I'm pretty sure this can somehow be done automagically through that Phabricator/Arcanist/Whatever widget, but who knows?! ;-) – but I need your (full?) name and an email address, so that I can set the correct author for the commit. I found neither … would you be so kind to tell me (e. g. via IRC at the kphotoalbum channel on freenode? I'm most of the time logged in as l3u there). Thanks :-)

Builds and runs fine here on Gentoo, using GCC 6.4.0.
The patch seems to be reasonable to me, but I have to ask a dumb question as I'm new to that Phabricator thing: How can I test it? It doesn't live in git, does it? Can I download a patch that I can apply to a local testing branch?
