Organize presence at FOSDEM 2024
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Fosdem is again happening this year in Brussels, on the 3-4 February, so let's organize our presence there

Goals

Needs to be filled in. Read this first:

Tasks (stand)

  • Get a stand
  • QR Slideshow
    • kde.org
    • apps.kde.org
    • ...

Ready to use:

Editable version and resources available at

Promo Team Resources/Events/FOSDEM/2024/QRs/

  • Krita demo station
    • Drawing tablet + pen - sent to @hannahk
    • Artist (good to have, but not essential. You can let attendees use the tablet)
    • Standalone large monitor (see above, under "Hardware")
  • ...

Goals

  • Encouraging attendees to contribute to KDE projects.
  • Present KDE projects at FOSDEM to highlight their significance and advancements within the FOSS community. Not a goal. This is a mean to a goal. What you want people to do with this information is the goal
  • To advocate for FOSS by engaging attendees, showcasing KDE technologies, Not a goal. A mean. and recruiting new contributors to the KDE community. Duplicate of the first one above.
  • Raise at least €2000 for KDE via donations (mean: via merch and just asking)
  • Make the KDE brand more popular and recognisable (mean: by getting attendees to stick KDE stickers to their laptops)
  • Get at least 100 more sign ups as supporting members (mean: asking people who stop at the booth and say they want to contribute)
  • Get more attendees to download and start using KDE software (mean: with demos of apps attendees can play with - e.g. Krita demo)
  • Get attendees to install Plasma 6 Beta 2 so there are more testers (mean: by showcasing plasma 6 Beta and helping users to install it then and there)
  • Tempt attendees to install when it comes out at the end of February (mean: by showcasing Plasma 6 Beta 2 and having attendees subscribe to our social media so they can know when it becomes available)

Gamified mean

  • Subscribe at least 100 more people to our Mastodon account

If you don't find an artist for the Krita demo, it is not a big issue: turn the screen and the tablet the other way so that attendees can use it. It is very engaging and sooner or later someone with some artistic talent will come by and will draw you a nice KDE-themed picture. It always happens.

@paulb At the moment it does not look like I will be attending FOSDEM. I will ask around the KDE Berlin community if someone can bring KDE Eco flyers with them and will let you know. Thanks for asking!

Ok. I read somewhere that @lydia, @ognarb and @vkrause may be going by train. As long it is not a massive sack of paper, I guess they could bring them.

We need to start ticking stuff off that list up there pronto. The sooner we know the better. 🙏🏻

Please put your name down for booth staffing so we can know who we can count on! We would need at least 2 people per shift, and between 3 and 4 shifts so people staffing the booth can take a break, eat, get some fresh air and take bathroom breaks.

Ideally there should be at least one person with comprehensive technical knowledge of what is being shown on the table per shift to answer questions or help people "play" with the stuff.

Of course you also want to go to talks, and the FOSDEM Schedule seems to be 100% decided at this stage. Check it out and see if you can work out helping at the booth around the talks you want to attend.

After much fighting with the crappy proprietary VisionFive2 driver (no open driver yet there) I had to switch to prepare a demo on a Raspberry-Pi5 board. Looks good already :) Will be based on Yocto master with a couple of unmerged patches for RPI5 support, as well as latest state of KDE Yocto layers and everything with a Plasma Mobile shell. I will also bring a very nice touch screen with me for the stall.

Sounds great! These are the things that are magnets for FOSDEM attendees.

I have begun reaching out to various KDE communities about local megarelease parties at the end of February/beginning of March (see various "organizing a megarelease party" posts at Discuss).

Many KDE community members and enthusiasts will be in Brussels for FOSDEM. I think it could be helpful to organize an in-person meetup to bring community organizers together to plan these parties. Promo will also likely have a role in the megarelease parties by providing local organizers with promotional materials and announcing the events in public channels.

Unfortunately I won't be at FOSDEM, but maybe someone in this thread will be and would like to help arrange a meetup for megarelease party planning? I would be happy to help coordinate.

I won't be at FOSDEM either 😬 , but this, I think, has to happen.

Do we still need hardware for the booth, other than the rpi? I can bring some but it would be good some hindsight.

Yes, please, as nobody else has confirmed the hardware they are bringing. I have no KDE hardware.

paulb added a comment.Jan 29 2024, 8:27 AM

Everything that has not been marked is not confirmed, @apol . I think a PinePhone (or the Beta or the Pro, no need for both) would be good and a Steam Deck. The thing that is logistically complicated is the monitor, especially if flying, but it would be good to have.

Maybe... I'm not sure about my utility, I'm only KDE Plasma user (not KDE developer), sometimes I did some promo stuff at KDE Spain Community and others, but nowadays I'm a little bit disconnected. Maybe I can help with the opening or at closing?

Many questions will be very general and many people will ask stuff like can they take stickers or about the T-shirts. No technical knowledge needed for that! Devs will also be around so you can always delegate the more specific questions to them.

You can report to @aniqakhokhar and she will help you out!

Whatever you do, we appreciate and thank you for your support.

Those knitted Konquis are so great I might suggest charging more, too. 15€ for something unique and handmade is a steal compared to a 25€ for a mass-produced print-on-demand T-shirt.

True.

aacid added a comment.Feb 6 2024, 12:04 AM

Anecdotal evidence, when setting up the booth, someone asked "how much are the konquis" and they said "that's quite cheap" when told 15€

As a clearly biased side, my mother gets 5€ back of those 15€ but that basically only covers materials cost, yarn and wadding are relatively expensive when bought at small retail quantities, i.e. all the work she puts in making these (which is non negligible) is a donation she makes to KDE because she knows that makes me happy, that said if KDE is going to sell the Konquis for more than 15€ i think it would be relatively fair to increase the donation my mother gets back, say from a 10/5 split to a 13.5/6.5 (20€ selling price) or a 17/8 (25€ selling price) one.

I agree and that was my first thought about increasing the price: let's pay more per unit to the @aacid 's mum for all the work.
