    • Development
    • Translations
    • Interface design
    • Documentation
    • User support
    • Promotion
    • Web
    • Accessibility
    • Donation
  • Micro volunteering

    • Fix a bug
    • Triage a bug
    • Help a new KDE user
  • Learn More (Button/links to the wiki page for those that need more information before committing)

The current page is hosted in a wiki as such form and any other dynamic elements are not supported :/

So it means we will either need to create a new website for that or not do add any forms.

Maybe we could reuse https://codetribute.mozilla.org/ but for kde, the code can be found here but I don't see any license :(

@ognarb can we create a static webpage for "Get Involved"? We do not need to change the wiki page.

So if I understand correctly the plan is to create a new page kde.org/get-involved with 4 buttons (Join our mailing list, steps, become a mentor, micro-volunteering). This page will link to the community.k.o/Get_Involved but also other things. I'm not sure how I feel about it and adding an additional page to kde.org with an intermediate steep doesn't feel right. We want to remove steeps and not add more.

I'm also very confused by the Join our mailing list buttons, we have tons of mailing list and mailing list are not the most user friendly way to communicate. And we already have this section for the communication: https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Getting_in_touch_and_working_together.

Also, what is the plan for the "Become a Mentor" button? Do you mean a website where people can register themself as a mentor? If yes, note that this will require do be a completely new website since kde.org will soon only support static promotional content.

I'm not sure that is the advantage of adding a new page to kde.org instead of updating the content of the wiki that everyone can edit.

@ognarb I have tried creating an image to express this idea visually.

We would like to provide options for newcomers so that they can contribute in a way they want.

We can link the join our mailing list page with the one that exists already. The idea is to make it easier for newcomers.

Be a mentor is just an idea we can always remove it.

This static page will be linked to the Wiki page.

I think it might be worth stepping back and re-defining the problems we're aiming to solve here. I see:

We have to make our "Get Involved" page easier to access/understand for the newcomers. To make it simplified here are a few suggestions:

What about the current page is considered difficult to access or understand? I think we need to have a firm grasp of that before we go proposing changes. In particular a lot of the proposed changes are already reflected in the current page, just maybe not presented in the clearest way. Since the current page is a wiki, perhaps we could polish it up quickly according to these suggestions and then see what else is needed after that (if anything).

I would go even simpler. Big button: "Welcome to KDE Chat" and link it to the matrix webchat. This element should dominate over everything else and be what most people click.

Remove mailing lists and mentorships.

I do like the "micro volunteering" thing though. Make that

Join projects should probably be less intimidating too

"Join a KDE Project"

  • Get rid of the steps
  • Reduce the titles of each project to one word for consistency's sake: Development / Translation / Design / Documentation / Web / Accessibility / Promo

Note: don't make the section headers look like buttons!

Finally, another big button "Learn More" that links to that very detailed wiki page for those that need more information before committing.

In addition: From experience we've learned that we don't want a way for random people from the internet to sign up and be a mentor. Mentoring takes special skills and knowledge of the community to be effective and a good experience for the mentee.

Thanks for looking into improving the onboarding experience.

I will revise the task based on everyone’s suggestions

Forwarding my answer from some private discussion (with some small edits):

Sorry but I'm not sure it is worth the effort 😔 I already have some plans to improve the newcomers' experience and make it more attractive to contribute (improved experience of season.kde.org and a badge system in the next identity service) but my time is pretty limited now (and I'm getting quite frustrated to work on web stuff lately after that my proposal for dot.k.o and akademy.k.o were rejected).

Maybe someone else in KDE web team is interested in taking this task. (#kde-www or https://t.me/KDEWeb).

Please don't add a button "Become a mentor." Mentoring is not something a beginner can do. Most of our mentors are either chosen on an informal basis as various experienced people help beginners to learn new skills, or the more formal way that people volunteer to be GSoC/GCi or SoK mentors. Again, newcomers can't do these jobs.

Noted. Thanks Val.
