I would strongly support using Kicker instead of Kickoff by default. openSUSE already does this, I believe. Kicker is hugely more usable in a variety of ways IMHO, and also more compact, addressing a common complaint that Kickoff wastes space.

Default background will introduce too much details on login screen (too much edges, etc). Just putting as an idea: blur background in sddm and screen locker(+ make it a little darker/brighter with light/dark theme). It will make login screen more fancier + won't introduce so much "details".

One thing to consider is that we might also want to make the Panel locked by default, which hides the hamburger menu that otherwise appears on the far right. That way, the actual farthest-right item would be the Show Desktop button and it would be perfectly Fitts'-law-compliant. :)

My vote is that the default configuration should be maximum performance, brightest screen, etc. when plugged in. I do not mind trading performance for battery life, but a sane default is to turn off power savings when plugged in, especially assuming most users power down their laptops (or at least suspend them) nightly.

Let me add a personal view here:
I am "old" (close to 60). I have bad eyesight (+3.4). Still, I don't read menus and such, I scan for patterns. The more I can scan at once the better - this is where font size comes into play. And I nearly always trade a slight blur for overview.
When I actually have to read something it is within an application and there is always Ctrl+Mousewheel at hand. That said, I'm not really objecting to a higher font size as it is easy to configure anyway. However, I also see no reason to do it.

I think the current are already bordering on the large side. I tend to take it down 1pt rather than bump it up. I have tried a test in a stock install with a +1 pt size bump, and it took some of the fonts from already borderline oversize, to looking quite out of place. Panel and kicker/kickoff in particular.

But what would the majority of our users prefer? That's the real question here. We're not making this for ourselves but rather for them.
