Will need a merge from upstream to get it in though.

Also, please submit an upstream bug report with your request for Kickoff's search field to look more like a search field.
I would strongly support using Kicker instead of Kickoff by default. openSUSE already does this, I believe. Kicker is hugely more usable in a variety of ways IMHO, and also more compact, addressing a common complaint that Kickoff wastes space.
Strongly agree. Anecdotally, this seems to confuse some of the "regular users" I support who use KDE Plasma. Users on other platforms are accustomed to referring to apps by their names.
FWIW, there are rumblings of changing this upstream, too. It won't get done in time for Kubuntu 18.04, but the single-click-by-default setting's days may be numbered for everyone.
FWIW just to mention ist: single-click is consistent with the webpage/app behaviour and webapp/pages get more and more common.

Nobody seems to think this needs adjustment; closing.
It's on launchpad under ubuntu-slideshow-ubuntu or something like that.
Is it in a github repo, or Launchpad.net?
Has anyone made this change yet?

sounds good!
I prefer: "For anything else, you can install more software in Discover, our software center."

In case the double-click proposal would be accepted, ...
IMHO we have to make sure that old installations keep their current behaviour.
AFAIU this would not be the case if we just set a new default.

Discover developers got a report of the same thing happening for Krita in Ubuntu, so maybe there's something screwy with upstream AppStream metadata. Tracking this upstream: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/appstream-generator/+bug/1748278
Default background will introduce too much details on login screen (too much edges, etc). Just putting as an idea: blur background in sddm and screen locker(+ make it a little darker/brighter with light/dark theme). It will make login screen more fancier + won't introduce so much "details".
This is totally happening upstream FYI!

Agreed in regards to the selection markers. There are times people have asked me what those even do so since they aren't very intuitive anyway it makes sense to disable them with double click
If we do this, we should also turn off Selection Markers in Dolphin, since they only makes sense with Single-click mode (Dolphin > Settings > Configure Dolphin > General > Uncheck "Show Selection marker"
I agree with this task for the above reasons and to add onto the selecting issue. A ton of people are unaware of the Ctrl+click option for selecting so it just creates frustrations. This would be a good step to alleviate some new user frustration.
One thing to consider is that we might also want to make the Panel locked by default, which hides the hamburger menu that otherwise appears on the far right. That way, the actual farthest-right item would be the Show Desktop button and it would be perfectly Fitts'-law-compliant. :)
This would be great for Windows to Kubuntu switchers. I don't use show desktop at all but I do know a lot of people who like it.
Sounds sane enough.
My vote is that the default configuration should be maximum performance, brightest screen, etc. when plugged in. I do not mind trading performance for battery life, but a sane default is to turn off power savings when plugged in, especially assuming most users power down their laptops (or at least suspend them) nightly.

Just saw another report of this in the wild: https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/7vpwb5/plasma_512_bug_thread/dtv3t4y/
/me loves the "Set Sail for Adventure" button.
I take that back, one system had a slight issue as I mentioned in Kubuntu:
I'm happy to hear it was just me!
3 machines upgraded here without issue (just in case we are taking a poll) :)

In my 17.10 VM with Backports Landing, Konsole and Kate have the regular menu (File Edit, View, etc.) Discover does not, but I do not think it ever did.
Curious. This did not happen on my main bare metal install, or the several VM upgrades I tested.
I think you are doing the job. Rick created the task, so I guess he should chime in when he can.

IMO, the default wallpaper in 5.11 is really good. But, it also would be great to have elarun wallpaper from oxygen. Folder View with elarun wallpaper and folders from breeze icon theme looks great.
Any further suggestions? I will have a look back at past wallpaper sources to see is there are any nice candidates.
I think the translucency is there more to indicate that you have 'picked up' the window for moving, so in that regard I find this useful, and would rather it stayed on.
Will have to test this. I turn most animations off by default, so will have to try in a fresh profile. Unless it is VERY subtle, I am sceptical, but you never know......
Did not do this for 17.10 as the default wallpaper for Plasma 5.10 has some very light parts which gave horrible contrast with the user logos and login fields/buttons.
I don't mind this in theory..... I think.
I don't even faintly squint at that, and I don't think most people would either.
I find myself squinting in your "sane defaults" screenshot--especially at the text in Kickoff. It's more compact, but much less readable IMHO.
Whereas with the sane current defaults:
Kickoff takes up a ridiculous proportion of the screen as it scales up. Panel font size looks comical. Other fonts are disproportionally large.
We have to be careful when comparing screenshots
Could you share a screenshot?
I have just tried this on a very standard laptop 1600x900 display, which may many will have. Even 10pt is quite large. 11pt just looks stupid.
@ach has it right. Most people don't and won't change defaults. Good defaults are especially important in a work environment where people are even less likely to customize their machines, or even may be presented from doing it.
Reminds me ...
Let me add a personal view here:
I am "old" (close to 60). I have bad eyesight (+3.4). Still, I don't read menus and such, I scan for patterns. The more I can scan at once the better - this is where font size comes into play. And I nearly always trade a slight blur for overview.
When I actually have to read something it is within an application and there is always Ctrl+Mousewheel at hand. That said, I'm not really objecting to a higher font size as it is easy to configure anyway. However, I also see no reason to do it.
From my experience 50 % increase font size, 50 % keep it. Depends on who many young and older people you see using KDE.

I think the current are already bordering on the large side. I tend to take it down 1pt rather than bump it up. I have tried a test in a stock install with a +1 pt size bump, and it took some of the fonts from already borderline oversize, to looking quite out of place. Panel and kicker/kickoff in particular.
But what would the majority of our users prefer? That's the real question here. We're not making this for ourselves but rather for them. I think that especially given Ubuntu's focus on accessibility to all kinds of people, making the fonts more readable to people with all different eyesight characteristics would be a benefit.
I prefer the default -1
The side-by-side is quite dramatic.
