Attend External Events 2018: Embedded Linux Conference Europe
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In this task we will co-ordinate activities to be carried out at the Embedded Linux Conference Europe.

When and where will it be held?

The Embedded Linux Conference Europe which will be held in Edinburgh from the 22nd to the 24th of October.

What is it?

"ELC is the premier vendor-neutral technical conference for companies and developers using Linux in embedded products. Now in its 13th year, the conference gathers user-space developers, product vendors, kernel, and systems developers to collaborate."

"Embedded" includes "Linux in Devices such as Mobile Phones, DVRs, TV, Cameras, etc".

What do we want to achieve?

  • Attract new developers and contributors to Plasma, Plasma Mobile, KDE embedded technologies, and so on.
  • Hopefully spark interest in companies and get more corporate backing for KDE tech in general.

How will we achieve these goals?

With...

... Talks

  • @apol has submitted a talk that will explain how to use Docker to emulate different hardware architectures for development and testing purposes.
  • @bshah will submit a proposal about Plasma Mobile.

... A Booth

  • @jriddell would like to run the booth, with help from other attendees.
  • Read T7315 to see what should be done and how to make the booth as successful as possible.

... Networking

Hey
I'd like to attend and help run the booth and anything else that might need doing, I've worked on getting Plasma working on the Pinebook and other misc. ARM devices.

Hello Rohan,

Note we haven't been guaranteed a booth yet, @garg. We are insisting a lot, but the possibility they turn around and say we won't have it exists.

Your best bet is to submit a talk (and then get accepted, of course). Use the their CfP.

For the record, making Plasma work on ARM devices I think is a good topic for a talk, @garg .

I think it is a question of focus. If your focus is how Kirigiami can help adapt applications to mobile devices ("mobile devices" being one of the hot topics of the conference) it will probably be okay. In any case, we won't know if this is what they're looking for or not unless you submit your talk. So I say, go for it.

It is ONtopic. Please send it. The form to send a paper requires additional content, not just the abstract. It takes some time to complete it. Do not leave it for the last minute. I can help you with the abstract if required @mart

I will be at the event. Richard Dale might be too.

Excellent! I hope we get some accepted so there are several KDE developers representing us at the event.

All our talks got rejected. I have asked for feedback from the selection team to try and figure out why.

We did get a booth though.

Can someone from the area (@jriddell?) advise on a good place to stay - comfy, clean, with decent WiFi, near the venue, but not too expensive? #beggarsbeingchoosers

There's loads of hotels around. I can't think of any cheapo hotels though like we had in Vienna. Nearest hostel is http://www.lighthousehostel.co.uk/cheap-places-to-stay-in-edinburgh.html or depending on numbers I can accomodate one or two and my flat and my dad's house also has spare rooms.

I se there are also some apartments for rent for short stays. This worked for Brussels. We can look into all of these options.
