Do we have an initial design to have tweaked?
FWIW, note we're really short on time... :)
Copying a list of design-related issues spotted by @duffus from T5778
- kerning in footer and front page is too crushed together
- gear round page numbers is pixelated and on p10, p5 it is off the page
- some of the sponsor logos seem to be of too low resolution?
SOLVED:
- missing credits for photos on p1, p4 --- the photos are from Pixabay and the license doesn't require attribution.
Everyone, please add your own suggestions (if you have any).
If you're all perfectly happy with the current design, we'll just replace the text with our edited version, and the brochure will be good to go. :)
I'd say that if you could come up with a version with the proper text that would be good already, we should start shipping it.
I have been playing around with the cover. Here is a draft I made. It combines the KDE logo with el Índalo, the very famous neolithic symbol of Almería.
The fonts and the logo may be wrong (in my hurry I picked the ones that at least resembled the originals), and the colours may need a little work.
I have to go to the airport in about 30 minutes. I am flying to London for two days for family business and I won't have access to my computer. Given more time, say until Friday night, I could create a mock up master pages that may improve on the originals.
Can we hold of until then, or work on other aspects of the content?
I am also attaching the original SVG. I am not including the font, since I know it is wrong.
Hello,
Please find attached what could be the final version of the cover. I got rid of the gradient (too 2013) and went for a Vitruvian Man look for the logo and Índalo.
I also changed the fonts for Lato. I think that the original may have been Quiroh, but Quiroh is proprietary (and expensive!). Lato is free (as in beer and freedom) and is very, very similar. In my opinion, it is even classier than Quiroh.
For those who enjoy typography and want something elegant in your collection, you can get it from here:
https://fontlibrary.org/en/font/lato
Although I am also putting all resources, including fonts, on a shared folder on share.kde.org.
I am now working on creating master pages in Scribus. It won't take long. A couple of hours.
When that is done, it should be quite simple to add texts and images.
By tonight I should have something decent to show you.
See ya.
The Akademy logo is in Nokia Pure, on the longer term todo list is replacing the logo{F3551197}
Thanks @duffus. I can't find this font to download anywhere, at least not in the correct weight. Also, I am unsure of the license. Have you got any information about this?
Top everybody following this thread, if the license were proprietary, do you think we should switch to a free source one like Lato (or any other typeface you prefer)?
I included a copy above
There isn't any real reason to use it for things other than the logo (except maybe where we extend the logo to include date etc). With the assumption that a bazillion different fonts aren't used in the brochure :-)
Regarding license, it doesn't look like they care that much. Personally I don't care though, I think this just should be out ASAP.
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ttf-nokiapure/
A proprietary license on a font in my experience generates a mess down the line.
Besides, the Nokia flavour @ruffus mentions seems to have disappeared from the web, No, those URLs don't lead to the font either. This is bad. it means we would have to depend on a bitmap Akademy
If you guys accept that the logo looks good with Lato, I recommend we go with that.
I think this just should be out ASAP.
Yes, I realise. I'm on it.
@paulb as I said there is no particular reason to use Nokia Pure except for things that need to look like the logo so there shouldn't be any issues if you want to use something different for the brochure text
I uploaded both Nokia Pure -> F3551197 and the Akademy Logo in SVG -> F3551201 earlier in this task when you asked about them
I uploaded both Nokia Pure
Yes, an I appreciate that. Thanks. The problemis the TTF only includes one weight (Normal) and it is not the same weight as the one used in the logo. No problems. As I say, proprietary fonts are a liability (surprise!) and we're better off without them.
As we have the logo in SVG I don't really see any issues? We have managed fine for years with it.
Also AFAIK there has never been any other weight of the font, thats it.
Yes, absolutely. It is just a question of consistentcy. In a document like this, I would tend to use fonts from the same font family throughout a document so there is no jarring jumps from one style to another. With longer documents, it is different, of course. There you can mix Sans Serif fonts for titles with Serif styles for the text body, for example. But here, it would look a bit weird. So you need a font with plenty of different weights (Bold, condensed, light, ... italics, of course, etc.). Unfortunately there are very few open fonts that provide that. The good news, Lato does, and it looks reasonably similar to Nokia Pure.
Just wanted to share with you guys some progress regarding the PDF flyer. I hope you like it.
Now I have master pages and styles, progress is much faster. I will have the whole thing done and ready to go late tonight, I am estimating.
Looking good!
Note the last pages explaining the modalities and the form to submit: https://akademy.kde.org/sites/akademy.kde.org/files/2015/SponsorshipBrochureAkademy2015.pdf
Sorry guys. Pages 7 and 8 were a nightmare, and then some stupid bug in Scribus messed up my page numbering when rendering to PDF. I have taken a detour to solve it, but it took me quite a long time of trial and error before I came up with a "solution" (read "horrible hack"). Looks good though. Here it is:
All sources (including fonts, images and Scribus source files) have been uploaded to the Promo Team Resources/Akademy2017/Sponsorship/Brochure/ folder on http://share.kde.org. If you do have to edit the Scribus original, make sure you have all the Lato fonts installed and use the version in the "Final" folder.
Please go over this with a fine comb, since I had to change several things (including re-doing the table on page 8) to make things fit and graphically consistent with the rest of the design.
Oh. Pages with messed up numbers (and "fixed") are 4, and 9, so careful if you decide to edit those. Also, table on page 8 is a PDF. I have uploaded the ODT I created to generate the table also.
Note that the links are also clickable, including the email address on page 8.
S**t. Forgot the form. Sorry guys,. Carry on. I'll be back. You can still check for typos and such, please, while I create the form.
Now. Sorry guys. this one is the correct one, with embedded form.
Also uploaded PDF and sources to share as before.
Looks good, but why is the PDF 55MB big? There must be some gigantic images in there...
That would make it quite heavy to send via email or for people to download...
Ah... That would be the logos page, @colomar. One of the problems on the first version was that some of the logos were low res or pixelated. So I went and grabbed high res versions.
Let me see if I can downsize the PDF without affecting quality too much,
It's great! But...we have a typo right on the first page 🙈 ("anual" gathering).
Do you want me to go through the source file and fix typos, or should I just list them and you change the text, to avoid messing up the design?
The rest of the text is pretty much perfect, this is all I could find:
Page 2
Under "What is Akademy?"
...1800 contributors from all over the World. --> should we really spell it with a capital w?
other Qt related projects --> Qt-related
Page 4
Under "Hacklab Almeria"
They have hosted numerous workshops and events like the Women and Technology Conference, PythonHack and have been actively encouraging...
This sentence reads weird, like there's a connector missing. Suggestion:
"...like the Women and Technology conference and PythonHack, and have been actively..."
Page 8
Under "Akademy Benefits"
Network event with KDE board --> shouldn't it be capitalized, Board?
Page 9
Under "Terms and Conditions", section 1
KDE e.V. has the right to be acknowledged
FINAL VERSION
All elements are there, proofread (thanks @skadinna ) and corrected. Weighs 2.1 MBs, so good as email attachment.
2.1 MB, much better! :)
The cover page looks like has some compression artifacts in the text. Is it a bitmap which has been compressed?
If so: Would it perhaps be possible to use a different format for it which can be shrunk to a usable size without any loss?
Hi @colomar,
I adjusted the compression and now have two versions:
Lossy (~ 3 MBs):
and lossless (~ 9 MBs):
The text of the title should look good on both, however because, you were right, the text was part an image, and now it isn't: it is formatted text.
Are we sure we don't want to suggest email at the bottom of the last page?
Fax is OK since as far as i remember it still sends us an email, but "regular mail" seems like "too slow" for this thing, no?
Not email? Interesting. Just say and I can add/modify whatever you want in 5 minutes.
I have been playing around with the cover. Here is a draft I made. It combines the KDE logo with el Índalo, the very famous neolithic symbol of Almería.
Sorry for being pedantic but it's written «Indalo» and spelled the same in Spanish :)
The 3mb version is now uploaded to the akademy website:
https://akademy.kde.org/sites/akademy.kde.org/files/2017/Akademy2017_Sponsorship_Opportunities.pdf
https://akademy.kde.org/2017/sponsoring is up
Should i link it from the link bar and close this task?
