We want to attend the All-American High School Film Festival (AAHSFF)
Goal
When we go to an event, we go with a goal in mind. In this case, the goal is to
Get as many students as possible using Kdenlive for their video projects
As I see it, this goal can be achieved in two ways:
- by introducing the students themselves to the software for their projects
- by convincing their teachers/educators to install Kdenlive at their schools
At places like FOSDEM or Scale, KDE is relatively well-known. This means that all we have to do is set up a booth, put a bunch of gadgets, stickers and T-shirts on the table and people come to us.
This is not the case for A-AHSFF. At A-AHSFF, booth staff will have to be pro-active and engage attendees as they pass. Some suggestions on how to do this politely and non-aggressively:
- Make sure the computers are properly plugged in (so they don't switch off due to running out of battery), have screensavers, screen-locking, dimming, etc. all turned off, and have the screen brightness turned UP.
- Put the computers facing outwards, so that attendees can see the screens showing Kdenlive (loaded with a project) as they pass.
- You will have two chairs. Put one outside the booth so that interested attendees can sit down and try Kdenlive comfortably.
- Take turns to stand outside in front of the booth and hand out stickers and ask people if they would like to try Kdenlive as "... its a professional video editor made by a non-profit. We give it away for free" (< potential spiel you could use).
- Give yourselves mini-goals, such as:
Each staff member can try to...
- ... sit at least 20 students in the chair throughout the event
- ... show the software to at least 10 teachers/educators/education board members
- ... collect the details from at least 5 educators (especially name and email) and the schools they work at so we can follow up with them
- ... collect 10 emails each from Mac users so we can email them when native versions of Kdenlive for M1 and M2 come out (and then never again)
Or make up your own challenges that will get you interacting with attendees.
Finally, we want to be able to document our activities, so please take photos!

Lesson Learned
- Being late makes everything expensive
- Trying to rent stuff at the weekend is expensive
