Figure out manufacturers to contact on using Plasma as an available default
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Defaults do affect whether the user gets acquainted with a given computing environment as well as whether they stay on it.
It would be beneficial to contact manufacturers who ship Linux by default so that Plasma can come as default.
Let's make a list of manufacturers we haven't contacted yet and define how this contact should be made.

  • HP
  • Dell
  • Lenovo
  • Asus
  • Acer
  • VAIO
  • Toshiba
  • System76
  • Librem
  • Entroware
  • Juno Computers
  • StationX (current website is broken)
  • Starlabs
  • Tuxedo

Our mailing list is kde-ev-board@kde.org.

Has any progress been made on this task?

Hi @Guilhermems, the KDE e.V. board in collaboration with some community members is working on maintaining and building some of the relationships mentioned here.

Do you have something specific in mind?

As suggested above, if you plan to reach out to an organization on behalf of KDE, please first email in advance the board via kde-ev-board@kde.org to coordinate efforts.

I was thinking some country specific brands could be contacted too. The community could compile a list of companies specific to their countries. In Brazil, we have some brands that already ship some products with Linux but don't include Plasma/KDE software, like:

Positivo/VAIO (Positivo owns the VAIO brand here)

Multilaser

Daten (I don't know if they ship Plasma or not on their Linux products. They also sell products to the government)

Brands that don't currently sell products with Linux:

Avell (a local laptop brand focused on gaming and professional products)

2AM (they're also a Positivo brand, and they are focused on gaming).

Also, there are companies that certify and customize Linux software to work on some of those computers and also for the government. I know about one that certifies Linux to run on VAIOs here, they are called Policorp: https://policorp.com.br/

They currently certify 7 distros. Of those, only two (OpenMandriva and OpenSuse) ship with Plasma.
