What should happen when you hit PrScr when Spectacle is already running?
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Right now nothing happens, which is probably not ideal.

We have three different requests:

None of these seems like an inherently wrong or unreasonable outcome, so perhaps we should have a global option and support all three, defaulting to one of them.

Nailed it on the head there. I'd add the current behavior causes most trouble when you are pressed for time to capture something, such as in a video game, but whoops, Spectacle is already running and you've missed your opportunity. In that case you'd want a new instance of Spectacle which has captured your screen, but there are other use cases so I think having all three options would be good. On the basis of us making sure that the user does not miss out on their screen capture, however, I believe that spawning a new instance of Spectacle with the screen captured would be the preferable default. And I know that for the scenario I laid out someone can say "but you can just use SHIFT + PRT SC" - however not everyone knows of this, some that do forget that it's a thing and sometimes people just want to copy the screenshot to their clipboard, hence needing the Spectacle dialog.

This seems like a good idea. I also agree with @filipf that a new instance should be started, in the case that people want to take multiple screenshots without having to save each one before taking the next.

"but you can just use SHIFT + PRT SC"

Wow, I didn't know about that!!!!

actually there was a reddit thread about that.... we were talking about how it'd be nice for the meta+print, meta+shift+print keyboard shortcuts to store screenshots in the clipboard vs just saving them in ~/Pictures (so it'd be easier to paste them into a web browser or chat), but that's another issue altogether :D

That's D9117, which seems to have stalled unfortunately.
