Purism Phone Campaign
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Organise and carry out campaign to help make the Librem 5 campaign finish successfully and convince them to go with Plasma Mobile + Kirigami.

As a side effect, use Librem 5's inertia to spread awareness of KDE's mobiles technologies.

My initial, very rushed thoughts on what we should talk about with the people from Purism:

1 Target audience

(Who do we want to reach with this campaign?)

  • End users: Users interested in tech form beyond the KDE/Free Software bubble. Think readers of ZDNet TechCrunch Wired The Register The Verge [Add to this list...]
  • Smartphone geeks: think readers of Liliputing Android Authority xda developers [Add to this list ...]
  • FLOSS Community
  • Other: Users casually interested in the topic - Mainstream media with techie interests. Think newspapers that sometimes cover tech. -

2 Objective

(What do we want to achieve with this campaign?)

  • Crowdfunding: We want the crowd funding to succeed spectacularly to have something else to brag about.
  • Awareness: Raise awareness of KDE mobile tech. We want our target audience to become aware of what we are doing in mobile technology. Even if they are not programmers, we want the world to at least know that things like Kirigami, Plasma Mobile and Halium exist. We also want to make our audience aware that Android and iOS are not the only players and they should start thinking about breaking from the duopoly.

3 Method

  • Press Release: Relatively bombastic and simple, to be sent to journalists
  • Social Media (+Guerilla marketing): Enlist as many people as possible to spread the news in forum, groups, communities. I.e., what is NOT happening with the Randa crowdfunding.
  • Blogging: Brainstorm stories related and vaguely related to the main story (Purism phone) so we can bang the drum at least until the end of the crowdfunding. Then push each through the social media and guerilla marketing.
  • roadmap presentation: put plans into public readable / digestable form (wiki page, for example) and write a Dot story about it describing it, and adding visual material (mockups from the design team)
  • regular pieces about Plasma Mobile on blogs, can be of technical nature ("How does the phone stack work?", "Plasma Mobile port for CoolPhone100 available!", "Writing an app that works on desktop and Plasma Mobile", etc.) but also broader ("How Plasma Provides a Privacy Phone alternative", etc.)

Some comments on this (in no particular order),

  • Idea is, you highlight a problems, and then give a subtle hint that we are providing a solution to it.
  • Another idea I had was a bit more technical-ish post on why current "closed" devices suck and why Purism's phone is great idea.
  • Goal Settings, I have submitted a goal about improving Plasma Mobile platform and interestingly there are many people interested in it, see T6878 , I wonder if we can use this somehow in promotion that, "We are setting this goal and this is what can help us achieve that, you are up for it?"
  • We have lot of people interested in trying out Plasma Mobile, idea I had initially was "Hey, You know you can run Plasma Mobile on it, go make it reality!"
  • Another bit where we need to ask Purism to improve is, their tone of campaign, unfortunately right now it's mostly like GNOME-phone, (even take a look at the "Team quotes and endorsements" section for instance, there is no KDE presence there). Note that, this point might sound odd, but it's nothing against GNOME. Point being if Purism does ship phones with Plasma Mobile in first wave let's say, there will be lot of disappointments and bad PR move. So they need to improve this.

I will add some more topics and related links in this post as I gather them..

Yes, a classic.

Another idea I had was a bit more technical-ish post on why current "closed" devices suck and why Purism's phone is great idea.

Yes, although you can also do that on a non-technical level too. So maybe two stories? We're going to need plenty that cover a wide range of audiences and knowledge, so explaining why it sucks on a technical level and the writing another story explaining to end users why it sucks for them is also perfectly possible.

Goal Settings,

Yes, absolutely. But, even for beyond this campaign. Keeping everybody up to date with regard to Plasma Mobile is going to be an ongoing thing if this becomes popular. The underlying idea of this campaign for us is to try and use the attractiveness of this device and piggy back Plasma Mobile into the limelight.

We have lot of people interested in trying out Plasma Mobile, idea I had initially was "Hey, You know you can run Plasma Mobile on it, go make it reality!"

Another good idea for a "story" or sub-campaign. Noted. Thanks.

We are setting up things to work with them, so the tone of the campaign will probably change.
