Webpage advertising Linux distributions with KDE Software
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I have a prototype https://kde.carlschwan.eu/distributions very inspired by https://kde.ru/distributions ;)

It contains only major distributions with Plasma as default/or as option during the installation. The first two distribution are KDE Patrons and
the third is a KDE project.

I think I could add the fedora KDE spin too and a small explanation at the end that a user can install KDE applications and plasma in other distributions.

I polished a bit https://kde.carlschwan.eu/distributions.

If nobody complains before, I would like to land this Friday.

Looks amazing.

I have a very small number of wording suggestions:

  • " The choice of distribution is personalized and based on your preferences." -> " The choice of distribution can be quite personal." Or even just remove this sentence entirely.
  • "Canonical, the developer of Ubuntu and Kubuntu is a KDE Patron." -> "Canonical, the developer of Ubuntu and Kubuntu, is a KDE Patron."
  • "openSUSE comes in two flavors" -> openSUSE comes in two versions" (this is professional copy, and flavors are for things you eat)

Regarding the suggestion to use ROSA image writer, this may be my American perspective creeping in, but the .ru domain name of the download links might scare off some people. Sucks, but it is what it is. I wonder if Etcher (https://www.balena.io/etcher/) might be a more neutral recommendation.

This tool has been recommended for Neon for ages, and I didn't see any pushback.
It was also forked by KDE into https://community.kde.org/ISOImageWriter, if source code is the concern.

This may be my Russian perspective creeping in, but I imagine more people being put off by Electron than by a country's domain.

P.S. I don't have a preference of one over another, and I still hope KDE's tool gets polished to be offered.

Jonathan said our writer isn't ready for this sort of spotlight IIRC. @jriddell input?

This is great, Carl! Thank you so much for your work ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ™

If that's OK, I would just like to suggest a few small changes to the text:

  1. "Below are some popular Linux distributions with pre-installed KDE software."

change to: "This page lists some of the most popular Linux distributions with pre-installed KDE software."

  1. "Fedora is a stable distribution that is sponsored by Red Hat."

change to "Fedora is a stable distribution sponsored by Red Hat."

  1. "The distribution should also contain installation instructions and quick start guide."

change to "The distribution should also contain installation instructions and a quick-start guide."

  1. "A list of those are available in this wiki page"

change to "A list of those is available on the KDE Community wiki."

"Kubuntu is the Ubuntu version with KDE software by default." version -> flavour (or flavor)

for KDE neon ->
K-logo Made by KDE

KDE neon takes the latest Plasma desktop and KDE apps and builds them fresh each day for your pleasure, using the stable Ubuntu LTS base.

Most people will want our User edition built from released software, but we also have Testing and Unstable editions built directly from unreleased Git for helping develop our software. It is installable as your Linux distro or from Docker images.

The page generally is good but you will need to be prepared to field questions of why these distros were picked and why they are listed in the order they are listed in.

@skadinna @ngraham Thanks for suggestions. I updated the webpage.

@jriddell I added the Made by KDE brand for neon

Sigh, I already got many questions already and my answer is that I included the major distributions with a polished KDE version. For the order I used: KDE patrons -> KDE project -> other popular distributions. Not sure it's the best but it is impossible to be completely objective. For my sanity, I won't make this change very public other than in the community mailing list.

Can you change the text for neon to my suggestion?

Yep good answer, let's be prepared to hold the line on this as it will get people querying it.

I update the text for Neon. Sorry I missed it

I also landed it and I will write a mail to the mailing list announcing the change.

For my sanity, I won't make this change very public other than in the community mailing list.

Already on kde reddit!

At least I tried :(

Ah well, I guess it's fine then.

It was also forked by KDE into https://community.kde.org/ISOImageWriter, if source code is the concern.

Yeah, I would also prefer that we advertise our own, once it's ready.

Anyway this is up now; shall we close the Phab task?
