Matrix launch

Description

Scheduled for 19/02/2019

Folks, I did not realise invitees could not comment or edit an event on Phabricator. Although this task is public, it is not assigned to any project, so it is not easily discoverable without the URL. So don't divulge the URL! Thank you for your patience.

Landing page design:

  • Layout and contents for the page:
  • A logo

  • Some welcome text
Welcome to KDE's Matrix instance. Here you can chat with other members of the KDE community, get help, exchange files, contribute to KDE projects and offer your suggestions, time and know-how to the Free Software cause.
  • A list of rooms and descriptions you'd particularly like to call out for new users
  • Welcome (#kde-welcome)
  • General KDE channel (# kde)
  • KDE Development (#kde-devel)
  • VDG maybe? (#kde-vdg)
  • and possibly #kde-chat (off-topic talk, the current IRC channel is not very active but that could change)
  • Promo (#kde-promo)
  • Plasma (# plasma)
  • Plasma Mobile (no IRC channel)
  • KDE Support ( for questions, no IRC channel)
  • Links to Login, Registration, Bot (optional) and Room Directory
  • A colour scheme (in case you want to tweak the default Riot theme)

The KDE logo is a white K and gear on a #1d99f3 background. Those are the only official colours I am aware of. Maybe @abetts can help with this.

  • A background image for the login page, if you want to switch from the default one in favour of a branded one.

Maybe this one:

We can change it later if people don't like it.

Re the background image: The default is very nice, but I'd probably make sense to have something more KDE-y. Whatever the default Plasma wallpaper is at the time? The problem is that the current wallpaper is rather dark and uninviting.

Then we have this:

Can we change it later, @matthew ?

hi folks - sorry for lack of activity on my side; we are crunching to try to get Riot 1.0 final out the door tomorrow (although looks like we might do another RC rather than a final release and possibly shift the release to coincide with this announcement next week).

You can easily change the background whenever you like.

In reddit the last plasma wallpaper was used and as the channel is called kde the kde icon was shown. So at least the kde image should be there instead of plasma.

as the landing page is similar to https://riot.im/develop/#/login the easiest would be to use the default plasma wallpaper and instead of the riot logo the kde (the blue one that is linked here) logo.

Have slice of the different wallpapers can look a bit confuse, so I would prefer the default wallpaper

Second option would be to use the konquies https://www.kde.org/stuff/clipart.php

what I really like is the new download page from firefox https://wiki.mozilla.org/images/8/81/Downloadpageupdate.jpg

So have some matrix, communication, konqi style background page would the way to go, someone interested?

Kati and Konqi chat and there are hundreds of other connections, the lines can also get some 3d effect, ...

with the world map as background cause KDE connect the world

Instead of the line connections you see points on the world map the points can be eg. linux users, kde contributors, ...

This is my favourite so far.

Welcome text sounds good to me.

Hi all - I've finally had a chance to put some words together which can be used as needed for the announcement text. I've written it out in longform as i reason it's good to have as much material to borrow from as possible.

I'm afraid for expedience I've put it together on Google Docs; the URL is https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DUNGfkszIHcgifDfLbhoXB8SiM3bPM9TBbdUJRdkJlk/edit#.

There's also a checklist on the doc for the final things needed from my p.o.v.

Do we have a final background image yet?

Also, here is my remaining todo list (as stolen from the google doc). @paulb, should this be merged into the main task somehow?

Todo (on the Matrix side):

  • Deploy latest riot on webchat.kde.org
  • Update welcome page, home page & bg image (once finalised)
  • Set up the room directory to point to the list from https://userbase.kde.org/IRC_Channels as #kde:kde.org etc
  • Ensure mobile users get a sensible experience
  • Check that freenode bridging is working sanely for #kde etc (especially in terms of any nickserv requirements) and configure history sharing

Todo (on the KDE side):

one thought on welcome rooms for the welcome page: i suspect you should be highlighting the ones relevant for a general on-boarding audience (e.g. #kde, #kde-devel, #plasma, #kde-chat perhaps). More domain specific ones like #kde-vdg or #kde-promo i suspect would feel a bit weird to come across for newbies (and you will risk having a flood of confused people clicking into them). More than ~4 rooms is probably going to get too busy.

For context, the idea here is to call out these rooms specifically on the very first welcome scren (the one with the glossy welcome page). Meanwhile, the actual room directory of the server can be populated up with all the myriad channels which are currently called out at https://userbase.kde.org/IRC_Channels. Does that sound sane?

We should definitely list the #kde-welcome channel and if possible highlight it so it stands out. It's a new one created as part of the onboarding goal and it suits the purpose of this page perfectly. =)

Included. Getting rid of "Newbies", since I sense a lot of overlap there.

I am also editing our old Matrix page on the Wiki to bring it up to date (it referred exclusively to Matrix as a way of bridging to IRC rooms). Please get in there and fill in the blanks.

i've asked our advocacy team to jump into https://community.kde.org/Matrix to help polish it up as needed.

Also, I've just created https://matrix.to/#/#kde-matrix-support:matrix.org as a dedicated Matrix room to coordinate between us on the launch and subsequent support, so please feel free to jump in and sync there (especially on Tuesday! I'm afraid we don't have a Phabricator integration yet so it won't be synced to here (and Phabricator doesn't provide an RSS feed :'( )
