Promoting KDE and its projects at the downtown of Vienna during Akademy 2018
Closed, WontfixPublic

Description

What about setting up a booth during Akademy in the downtown of Vienna and showing 3 or (at your option) more of our projects standing under a free license to the general public?

For this we would definitely need:

  • a few KDE members, at the best with German speaking skills
  • a booth
  • devices to demonstrate the software on
  • permission from the city administration / the owner of the public space
  • a good place where many people pass
  • good weather
  • a good day where many people are at public spaces (in Europe, saturday is quite a good day because most people do not work and the shops are opened)

We could expand the promotion with the following things:

  • uniform KDE t-shirts for the people presenting the community and the software
  • if there are not enough German-speaking community members we could ask members of the local (GNU/) Linux user group, people from the local hacking space, people from related communities or students either they want to help us
  • flyers and / or cards to give away
  • balloons for the kids and / or the grown-up kids (people walking around with a KDE balloon would further promote KDE without any extra efforts because the ballon is seen by everybody)
  • maybe some other promotion materials like paper bags, pencils, sweets or other things with the KDE logo, the vision and / or the url to the website on it
  • (bootable) cds with KDE Neon or other software to install from
  • somebody who finances the whole activity

That is a really nice idea. I would suggest to join forces with one or more other FOSS projects, especially for helping with the organizational part. Saturday would take away people from Akademy or you do it on the Saturday after Akademy. Or you find enough people already in Vienna 1 week before Akademy and could also promote Akademy :)

That's an idea. Two birds with one stone.

Which other FOSS projects would you suggest? I cannot think of any other related project having so much community members in town as KDE has during Akademy.

Maybe we could ask the Akademy's local organization team either they can help us because they already know the city quite well.

Hard to say, there is a big Python community and we also have MetaLab (Hackerspace) and C3W (local CCC chapter). It's not about how many are here during Akademy but about organizing it before Akademy (where all KDE people are busy with helping organizing Akademy :) )

Are you from Vienna?

As local main organizer I can answer that quickly: No, don't expect much help from us, we are few and busy until Akademy ;)

I can understand you

Where would be a good place in Vienna to put a KDE booth up and running?
I have no idea because i have never been to Vienna.

@paulb Are you Bro6666?
