Organize Network Nepal's introductory event
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Main goal

  • Increase the number of members of the Nepalese Network.

Description

A series of events are going to be organized in between the lecture days of CS50xNepal (Harvard's Open Courseware) which is being held this February in our University, catered towards newcomers in the field of engineering. But, it is an open event on which anyone can participate. In between the lecture days, we plan to organize an introductory event for KDE with KDE Network Nepal.

Objectives:

  • To introduce and establish KDE Nepal Network.
  • To introduce students to FOSS, as most of the students here as per my own observation resemble free software as crack or duplicate.
  • To inspire students to experiment with alternatives instead of sticking with what they have only heard of.
  • To introduce students with KDE, its cross-platform products, and introduce them to Qt.
  • To encourage students to contribute to FOSS and tell them that code is only one out of many ways of contributing to FOSS.

Tasks

@scientiac: We have uploaded material to

https://collaborate.kde.org/s/yRgMBsFaCnYLip6

You have there:

  • Sample photos of what some stuff should look like
  • 3 designs of stand up banners in standard sizes, and a design for hanging banner. Choose one or another, a standup or hanging! Not both! Choose the one that you think will best fit your booth
  • A design for the front of the tablecloth. This is a standard size for tables at events in Europe and the US. You must find out the size of the table you will have!
  • Three designs for stickers. You have to find out how many attendees will come to the event

Your tasks now are:

  • Finding out the estimated number of attendees
  • Finding out size an layout of the booth (this will help decide if the tablecloth is the right size and which banner to pick)

You will have to contact the organizers for this.

When you have that, you need to contact local printers and find out what you can source locally and get estimates for:

  • Manufacturing and delivery of stickers (preferably diecast in vinyl)
  • Manufacturing and delivery of tablecloth
  • Manufacturing and delivery of the banner, whichever you decide is best, hang up or stand up

When you have all that, let us know asap so we can start filling in the estimated budget.

Bear in mind the first event is always the hardest! There is so much to do. It will get easier with each successive event.

Summary

Introduction to Linux and FOSS with the help of KDE software and announcement of the formation of KDE Network Nepal. How and why to contribute to open source? What is KDE, and where can you find the KDE Software? And some trivia on KDE.

How and Why?

After knowing about the KDE Network and a way to contribute to KDE as a Student. I had proposed an idea of a KDE Network for Nepal to represent KDE in Nepal to my friends and simultaneously to the KDE Promo team. Due to the support of KDE Promo team especially @aniqakhokhar and @paulb, I along with my fellow FOSS geek friends decided to Introduce the Network from an Introductory event along with KDE 6 Megarelease celebration.

Who were there?

Primarily the freshers of bachelor in Computer Engineering and Electronics Communication and Information Engineering with the CS50xNepal team, along with some students from sophomore and junior year.

What did we do?

We discussed on the following topics:

  1. FOSS, Open Source and how it functions
  2. Linux and It's Parts
  3. KDE Plasma and KDE Software
  4. KDE Community and KDE Network, Nepal

Additionally:

  1. Played Trivia Quiz on KDE
  2. Students shared their prior experiences with FOSS.
  3. Had Fun
Materials:

This was the presentation presented by Justin Flory (Community Architect, Fedora) on GNOME.Asia 2023, Kathmandu introducing everyone to Open Source. (I removed the part where he introduces him and his work)
