Okular website redesign and new content
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Okular website needs an update in terms of content but also design. The goal is to create a website that explains better the features of Okular and make it more interesting to potential new users.

The new website should use Hugo and the python scripts around it to support i18n and the old content (e.g. old releases) shouldn't be deleted.

I don't think this is something I want to assign the task to me but I can offer some mentoring around it and help with the design of the homepage. It's a good occasion to learn cool new stuff.

@ognarb I would like to work on this, If its still open.

It is still open :D I had some very basic work on it on a branch somewhere on my computer that I just pushed in this branch: https://invent.kde.org/carlschwan/okular-kde-org/-/tree/hugo.

Are you in the KDE web channel (matrix: #freenode_#kde-www:matrix.org or tg: https://t.me/KDEWeb)? I would like to explain to you how I plan to move forward with the translations

Hi! I would be interested in taking the task of updating Okular's website using HUGO as part of Season of KDE 2020. I posted a message on the okular-devel and kde-www mailing list, but got no answer. Would my work be useful? Would someone take me as their mentor?

So I don't think I can mentor a website related season of KDE alone (I want to focus on NeoChat or the documentation for SoK), but some people volunteered to help in the website channel so I might become a co-mentor ;) It would be nice to also have someone from the Okular team so that we can create something that there are happy with.

Did you saw https://invent.kde.org/carlschwan/okular-kde-org/-/tree/hugo. This was an attempt a long time ago to create a better website, looking back at it the homepage would need a lot more work showing off the big features of Okular:

  • Run everywhere: Plasma, Gnome and Linux in general, but also macOS, Windows, Android and Plasma Mobile
  • Support much more than just PDF (epub, ...)
  • Annotations support
  • Signature support
  • ...

This list probably needs to be completed with a few more stuff.

It is not fair to say that you got no answer, i answered you.

You are right @aacid, you were super nice and I am really thankful for your answers ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฅฐ I was actually going to write you a mail thanking you before I saw this issue, sorry

And @ognarb, I would love it if you could co-mentor! What will I have to do to get started with the application? I did see the work by Carl Schwan ( I dont know his phabricator username and so i cannot @ him ๐Ÿ˜ฟ) and I loved it, it is really good! I could try to start working on it on the christmas vacations but I have an exam January 15th and I dont know how much time I will have.

And you are right, having an okular developer guide me on what is desired would be important ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ok I will try to find another co-mentor, but, this time, different from my first co-mentor ๐Ÿ˜…
