Brainstorm a list of groups, subreddits, etc. where to promote KDE applications
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Currently, announcements for content sharing in social networks produces a workflow like so: posting in a KDE webpage -> sharing that post in the official KDE account of a given social network (if exists) -> sharing the official KDE account's post on certain groups or directly to groups. This last step can be made easier by defining which groups, subreddits or whatever general online social aglomerations within social networks are potential means for spreading the word about KDE applications.

Such a list would also serve the organizational purpose of defining which groups are currently targeted so that current members and potential future members can optimize sharing.

For this, we need to: i) verify which KDE applications can be shared in mainstream targeted groups; ii) verify in which relevant groups our announcements can be shared; iii) note the rules of such groups so that posts can be made/shared specifically for them and while always following the rules.

After this list is done, it should be transferred to the Promo wiki.

Applications with specific target audiences:

  • Kile/Kbibtex/LabPlot/Kmplot (Scientists)
  • Krita (Artists)
  • Kdenlive (Video producers)
  • Kdevelop (Developers)
  • Marble (OpenStreetMap)
  • Minuet (Musicians)
  • DigiKam (Photographers)

Groups where we already share:

  1. Reddit
  1. Facebook
  1. Twitter
  1. Mastodon
  1. Telegram Channels

Groups where we could share:

  1. Reddit
  1. Facebook
  1. Twitter
  1. Mastodon

Caveats and rules

sharing the official KDE account's post on certain groups or directly to groups

I would like to point out that the list of groups we share to often changes depending on the topic of the post, so stuff we post about Krita, apart fro going to r/kde and r/linux, will also go to r/libredesign, for example, while posts that cover other applications won't. This is, if I understand it correctly, is a way of formalising this and giving us a larger pool with which to work. Great initiative.

Maybe we could classify forums (subreddits, Facebook groups, specific websites, etc.) together by topic, or even by application. For example (and continuing with Krita):

Krita

  • r/libredesign
  • facebook.com/groups/grafix.design/
  • Deviant Art (?)
  • ...

Even if there were some duplicates, it would make it easier when consulting the list. You'd just have to scroll down to the application you were promoting on that day and follow the list.

Regarding this:

  1. Caveats and rules

You would also have to list rules under each group, because they are specific to each group. Some subreddits have rules about feedback or talking about tools (i.e. software), which you can only do on certain days, for example.

It would also be worth collecting details about what is likely to work in each forum. r/linux, for example, does not like bombastic, marketing-sounding, exclamation heavy (!!!!) titles; so, tweets usually have to be re-written for them. We have also observed that on many subreddits short is not always best, and a message that says "Krita X.0 released" will behave less engagement than one that says: "Krita X.0 is our now and comes with feature X, feature Y and feature Z". It would be good to be able to collect these observations on the final list so we don't only know where to post, but how to post it.

This means the list may end up looking like this

Art and Design

Krita

  • r/libredesign
    • Only allowed to talk about tools on Thursdays
    • Prefers text posts over links
    • Do not compare the advantages of Krita over GIMP! The users don't like that
    • Don't say: "Krita X.0 is out!"
    • Do say: "Krita released version X.0 today and it comes with feature X, feature Y and feature Z"
    • ...
  • facebook.com/groups/grafix.design/
    • Blah blah blah
    • ...
  • Deviant Art (?)
    • Blah blah blah
    • ...
  • ...
