Volume controls is a hardware setting and it's also what KMix does.

Unchecking "Hardware" category in system tray now hides volume controls too. Previously it was listed under "Miscellaneous".

The old systray also sorted items based on their category, so all hardware was grouped, the new one doesn't so this property doesn't change anything there.
