Change Babe repo name to vvave
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hi Ben,
Babe has been rebranded as suggested by the KDE community, the new name is vvave. ( v v a v e)
How could we proceed with changing the repos names ?
So far there are three affected repos:

  • babe-qml (app) -> vvave
  • babe-webside (app website) -> vvave-website
  • babeit (platform) -> vvave-stream

Hope you're having a great week.

What will be happening to the original Babe repository (https://phabricator.kde.org/source/babe/) given that it doesn't seem to be getting renamed?

What will be happening to the original Babe repository (https://phabricator.kde.org/source/babe/) given that it doesn't seem to be getting renamed?

I think it can stay as it is, since it will be only maintain until I make a stable release of vvave (qml version) after that i think it will be dead...
:)

Out of curiosity, where did the discussion about the new name happen? It seems problematic for saying out loud…

Hi Nicolas,
the first discussion was held on a meeting with the KDE e.V on the last week of February i think. The discussion was about the BabeIt platform and some legal issues around it. Then the issue about the name came up and it was suggested to look for a better name as Babe seemed to came up as sexist and childish. Then thanks to Lydia the discussion moved on to a mailing list between some members of the community where some ideas for a new named where tossed.

Here's the first message from Lydia for better understanding of why changing the name:

Hey folks :)

Several people keep bringing up that Babe as a name for the music
player is problematic.
At the promo sprint we were talking about how it'd be great to use it
as a big showcase for Kirigami but that the name is holding us back
from doing it. The name distracts from what is evidently an amazing
application with a bright future.
Camilo and I talked a bit about this and he agreed to brainstorming
alternative names. I'm getting our collective brain power together
here so we can do this.

Camilo maybe we can start with some questions to you: What do you want
your music player to be? What's the image you want to convey? What's
the vision you have for it? If we can take these into account it'll
help find fitting name suggestions.

Cheers

Maybe the discussion should have been had on a ticket.

Let me know what's problematic...

Saludos.

Having the discussion on a mailing list is perfectly fine, and is the generally accepted means of having discussions within the KDE Community.

I guess the question here is which mailing list this took place on?

It wasn't sent to a specific mailing list, it was sent to a group of people that Lydia thought could help me find a better name:
Paul Brown <paul.brown@kde.org>,
Ivana Isadora Devcic <isadora@kde.org>,
Jens Reuterberg <jens@ohyran.se>,
Sebastian Kügler <sebas@kde.org>,
Neofytos Kolokotronis <neofytosk@posteo.net>,
and Uri Herrera

The repositories have now been renamed on git.kde.org and Phabricator.
I will update the websites shortly to pull from their new sources, and make the relevant DNS changes.

The DNS and other server changes are now complete.
Your login for maintenance of vvave-stream.kde.org has now changed to vvaveadmin@mimi.kde.org from the previous babeitadmin@mimi.kde.org account previously used for SSH access.

Thank you so much Ben.
You're awesome! :)
