Objective: Distros!
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Goal

The aim of this task it is to get more comprehensive and better support for KDE software on more distros

HowTo

  • Get in touch with distro managers and promo teams (if they have such a thing) for some 1-on-1 marketing
  • Coordinate cross-promotional activities, such as promoting each other's releases and activities
  • Create a "for/distributors" page, highlighting the benefits of our software for distribution
  • Add distro information to our communication material, such as quarterly newsletters, blogs etc.
  • Invite contacts from distributions to KDE events, sprints, etc.
  • Invite ourselves to distro events
  • ...

TODOs

  • Brainstorm initial list of distros
    • Debian (GNOME is the default option in the installer, but KDE is there too)
    • Arch (no default DE)
    • Ubuntu (Heavily customized GNOME is the default; KDE version is Kubuntu and it's a separate download)
    • AlmaLinux (a RHEL alternative; could help drive attention to us)
    • SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop
    • MX Linux (KDE version is an option for download, but their "flagship edition" is XFCE)
    • Zorin OS (no KDE option)
  • Find out contacts for each
  • Brainstorm advantages of KDE for distributors
  • Collect feedback about why distributors aren't already shipping KDE stuff by default

Hi, in case it could be useful, here is a up-to-date graph with the default and supported DE on most distros:
https://eylenburg.github.io/de_default.htm

And also 2 more comparisons from the same site:
