The problem
While most technologies and communities (Linux, Arch, etc.) associated with SteamOS and SteamOS-powered get named when there is news related to SteamOS, KDE and Plasma are consipicously absent.
Cases in point:
While it is true that there is a reference to KDE/Plasma on teh Steam Deck page, it happens at the end of a long list of boring specs, right at the end of the page. It is unlikely that anybody sees this, and, even if they do, there is no link, so there is no way to get more information about our participation in this product.
What we would want to achieve
We want to try to be mentioned on every site and news item about SetamOS that gets publsihed, preferably with links pointing to our stuff.
Why would we want to achieve it
While KDE is popular in the FLOSS world, outside that niche, KDE is all but unknown. SteamOS and SteamOS powered products reach much wider and different audience. Having our brand recognised outside out bubble, should help us have more users and companies look for and adopt our software.
This is primary Promo goal.
How we can do it
- Create (or adapt) a new (or existing) branding for devices and other products built on top of KDE technologies, including products that come with SteamOS. We currently have "Made by KDE" for our own products. We can adapt, extend and formalise the "Powered by KDE" that was proposed some years ago for this very use.
- Get in touch with Valve and kindly ask can we elevate our profile with them and help them with promotion of their SteamOS powered products.
- Get in touch with Lenovo and do the same as with Valve.
- ... (Please leave your own ideas in the comments)
Please don't
Go at this alone. When approaching businesses, it is important we present a unified front with a coherent professional sounding message. Any ideas you have regarding this issue, report it here and we will work on the messaging and who the best interlocutor will be together.
Please do
Tell us about other devices that use SteamOS or KDE-related tec so we can approach them and offer collaborations.
We are already talking to the people behind the Pilet and made progress on collaborating with them. It would be good to here about other devices.
