My suggestion is to create 2 videos. Why?

  • I'd like to go all-in on 3d this time, which means it won't look like the actual UI -> existing users and devs may be confused and dislike the difference
  • showing screenshots and explaining new improvements (of UI's tailored to productivity and consistency, not to look trendy) isn't the best way to get a new viewer (esp. one used to proprietary OS's fancy ads) excited about Plasma

so,

  1. One would be more abstract, animated 3d representing major things Plasma is better at (which existing users already know). ・ here the animation would try to create engagement by itself
  2. Another would still have nice titles and all, but also with narration (maybe by some developers) to explain what the screencasts mean and thanking the community, showing which feature was made by who (like Paul's 5.22 video) ・here the focus is on the community and new improvements

(I created these tasks because if we go with this it's gonna take more time, obviously. And if the fully 3d approach doesn't work out, it will be time for other approaches to take lead, for future videos.)
What do you think?

Yo!

Currently I'm working on bringing one video to life, with some 3d animations and stuff. My plan currently is:

  • Start with HTML/CSS3 representations of screenshots that closely follow the Breeze style; based on screenshots that represent new features
  • Animate the various webpages to show the new features
  • Render the animations in:

(a) little snippets to embed in the announcement webpage to show the features

(b) one longer video to upload on youtube and peertube

  • Also embed some of the HTML/CSS themselves in the announcement webpage, which actually allows to make them slightly interactive

For the first step, I've asked help around, and many people stood up to re-create some screenshots! Here are the scenes I've asked so far, feel free to add more:

Overview effect, containment management dialog, login screen shake, discover app with the new elements in the app view, accent color settings, a generic KDE app with no content, search in the ovierview effect, kickoff, the desktop grid opening animation, a context menu (to show that they become bigger on touch), the global theme redesign dialogs, the global theme options by default, a KDE app with colored titlebar.

When these will all be ready, my plan is to start doing animations. I'm open to suggestions on how to design them, I've done no clear plan yet!

EDIT:
I reread your comment, I guess I misunderstood your aim. You're actually creating a Breeze CSS right?

@niccolove I also thought about screencast rendering. My issue was about rendering background as alpha channel to achieve better results at using screencasts as animated 3D planes in blender (I delivered a prototype on that here last year, and greenscreen method is pretty dirty at times). My aim is to present the Activity->Desktop->Screen-Matrix-Workflow with accent color feature and show it's better "spacial navigation" through use of 3D space.
Now, as lots of GUI elements are based on SVG source, isn't it thinkable to render screencasts into SVG animations directly to further postprocess the results for HiRes presentation purposes?
Maybe thats worth investigation on the long run.
PS: big thanks to https://invent.kde.org/tantalising and friends for the great job on accent color feature!

I'm replicating the UIs of various plasma components in HTML/CSS, yes
