pie portion activity
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Some ideas:

  • Give a fraction n/m, prepare a pie splitted in m (at higher levels, a multiple of m), and the child has to select on the pie the good number of splits.
  • Give a pie splitted in m with n selected splits and let the child input the fraction. The numerator or denominator (exclusive or, not both) will be displayed.

started in https://invent.kde.org/education/gcompris/-/tree/work/fractions_charts (addition of qml charts + first idea).

todo:

  • check if qml charts needs to be added to the packages and double check if it works without opengl.
  • update the wiki and everywhere needed to install the Qt Charts packages...

I tested the activity and do not see it as an activity to teach fraction. More like an activity that learn to associate a fraction description with its representation. Which is an excellent activity, but more a description activity than something aiming at understanding fractions notion.
Teaching fraction requires to work on both numerator and denominator. This is well explained here https://www.taalecole.ca/enseigner-fractions/ .
User needs to first create the denominateur. In class it is done using paper that we fold in equal part.
We could do the same on gcompris:

or with circles too as it is important to show different types of fractions to not create false types in children minds.
A button to add rows an other to add columns within a rectangle would do the job, a button to add a section in the circle too.
The fraction to represent should be presented in number not written with letters.
It would be great for older children to have factions greater than 1.

As it is a difficult exercice and the ability from GCompris to immediate correction would be a great advantage to teach this notion.
