Create Promo for Akademy 2020
To Do's:
The World Wide Web awaits!
This year, in 2020, Akademy will be hosted virtually on the BigBlueButton platform between Friday 4 September and Friday 11 September.
The conference is expected to draw hundreds of attendees from the global KDE Community to discuss and plan the future of the Community and its technology. Many participants from the broad free and open source software community, local organizations and software companies will also attend.
Akademy 2020 Program
Akademy 2020 will begin with virtual training sessions on Friday 4 September. This will be followed by a number of talk sessions held on Saturday 5 Sept. and Sunday 6 Sept. The remaining 5 days are filled with workshops and Birds of a Feather (BoFs).
The Internet and Akademy
Despite the world's current troubles and the need to keep the KDE Community healthy, thriving, and safe, the decision was made to host Akademy 2020 online. During the program organization period for this year's activities, multiple timezones were taken into consideration to ensure that regardless of physical location, any member of the KDE Community can participate in as many or as few conference activities as they like.
BigBlueButton and Akademy
True to KDE's values, BigBlueButton is an open source webinar platform that was originally released in June 2009. It operating system is GNU/Linux, has a number of third-party integrations, and uses WEBRTC for audio, video, screen sharing, recording, and playback functions. Since its initial release, BigBlueButton has been steadily improving with releases of new versions of the webinar platform on a regular basis, the newest release as recently as March of this year.
About Akademy
For most of the year, KDE—one of the largest free and open software communities in the world — works on-line by email, IRC, forums and mailing lists. Akademy provides all KDE contributors the opportunity to meet in person to foster social bonds, work on concrete technology issues, consider new ideas, and reinforce the innovative, dynamic culture of KDE. Akademy brings together artists, designers, developers, translators, users, writers, sponsors and many other types of KDE contributors to celebrate the achievements of the past year and help determine the direction for the next year. Hands-on sessions offer the opportunity for intense work bringing those plans to reality. The KDE Community welcomes companies building on KDE technology, and those that are looking for opportunities. For more information, please contact The Akademy Team.
We don't need all the stuff about BBB, that isn't really relevant and would likely generate bikeshedding
Would it be helpful to mention how we can still do valuable stuff even though its not in person? For anyone who's initial reaction is to just write it off
How about something like this?:

Due to the unusual circumstances we are living through and the need to keep the KDE Community healthy, thriving, and safe, the organizers have decided to host Akademy 2020 online. During the program organization period for this year's activities, we took into consideration multiple timezones to ensure that, regardless of physical location, every member of the KDE Community can participate in as many conference activities as they like.
Despite not being able to meet in person this year, KDE members will be able to reach an even wider audience and more people will be able to attend and watch the live talks, learn about the workings of the technology and the Community by participating in Q&As and panels.

I added in the advantages of doing an online event and a call to action. I am assuming that the registration and Call for Papers will be up and running when we publish this, right?
Needs links and so on.
Edit: I have not proofread this. May contain typos
thanks @paulb for that, looking good now
we weren't planning to open registration or CfP yet
Yeah.
Do we have a timeline for when registrations and CfPs will be open? Because, if we have, we could change that last sentence with the relevant info. If not, we can just put something like "Watch this space", as when things are ready we can do another short dot article with the details.
Or we can just put: "Registrations and Call for Papers will be opening soon!" for now
Not too sure when CfP will be we still need to get a committee and decide on what we want in the CfP requirements
Current version now on dot in preparation for announcement on Wednesday (not public yet):

I see your point of not including the epilogue explaining how Akademy usually serves for the Community to meet in person. Also, repeating the photo would like weird. Good call.
I think we need to come up with a version of the blurb for this year for future stuff
I think it somehow needs to include info about "normal" Akademys for context?
What about having some KDE Community members (20-30 for example) take a selfie. Have everyone send it in to a single person or shared file, and I can make up a nice collage for a "new group photo" while sticking with the virtual nature of this year's event.
I agree with you here. I would be happy to take a stab at it. I have spent days reading older Akademy publications and KDE information. At this point, I can write something up based on the info I've gathered, tailor it to a virtual context, and try to make it well rounded for future use.
I think this is a great idea. The group photo I think gives the wrong impression. Taking a selfie and sending it in takes literally seconds and it is nearly zero effort. Putting them into a collage at worst will take 30 minutes or less. I'll propose it in the Promo team's channel and see if I can implicate more channels.
