What exactly is this task tracking? Very general suggestions ("make it better") aren't very actionable. Do you have specific action items in mind for how to improve the installer slideshow?

I've got every single instance ready-for-upload.

@ngraham Visuals, wording, stuff ... as stated above. Or you think it's not perfectible?

No, I'm just wondering what specific changes you're proposing. Bug trackers work best when we break things down into individual tasks and remain explicit when communicating. Otherwise it becomes difficult to tell who's working on what and what's getting done, and the tool becomes an impediment rather than an asset.

"Change string X to say Y and add a globe image above it" (for example) is far more useful than "use more meaningful visuals and wording". That could mean anything. I agree with the goal, but want to see specifics. What are these proposed changes, specifically?

My initial intention was to upload all instances and suggest concrete/specific changes. I'm not sure whether those would be welcome, so I might have given up.

Well we can't know unless you show them to us! 😉

raddison claimed this task.Apr 8 2018, 10:33 AM

Happy to help on this, I see @raddison has claimed it, hopefully you'll come back with a proposal. I'd be happy to provide input on that.

I'll be back. Hopefully, very soon.

@ricktimmis I've been having a health issue. I'm sorry for the disappointment I have caused. I assume it's too late for making any changes, isn't it?

Hope you're feeling better! But yes, considering that the release is today, it's way too late. :)

Thanks Nate. I'm sorry I couldn't contribute with anything relevant.

There'll be another opportunity for the next release! And if we do indeed move to Calamares for the installer, that'll pretty much require that we redo the visuals anyway.

Oh, okay. I'm really looking forward to that.

@rikmills Provided you and the team is willing to accept some suggestions, we could give it a face-lift in 18.04.1. Please signal your willingness so I can know whether I should go forth with it or not. Thanks.

@ngraham Would you favor an all-image slide show, where text is incorporated into images (kinda like what Neon does)?

Would that make translations more difficult? That is, instead of merely substituting text, images need to be re-created?

Unfortunately, I think that would be the only downside.

I have translated the Neon slideshow so I'm pretty sure the text is not incorporated into images. Anyway, making the text translatable is a necessity IMO. Non-English users will not be impressed by a partially translated installer.

Indeed, we need the text to remain text, rather than be being embedded into images. Not only would that break the translation workflow, it would make changing anything (including translations) an order of magnitude harder.

Oh! Okay. I stand corrected. It is astonishing how elegant a slideshow can be with just a few well-chosen images and just a bit of text. The installer should probably not be a user manual.

"A few well chosen images with just a bit of text" sounds perfect. Do you have your slides anywhere we can see them?

Let's put some more fire into this thread. We just had the Beta so we are getting close to the point where we may not be able to make any changes.
