Freelancers working from home

Description

I want you to put yourself in two positions and look at the difference. I want to propose a new way of looking at using a desktop computer from home (as a freelancer) versus a desktop at work. The work desktop is easy - you basically use what the company gives you. But, if you are a freelancer working from home, you have many clients and many projects you're working on, as well as your own personal stuff. I want to make this basic suggestion:

Give "workspaces" more customization - different names, different background images, and the ability to open the same program in different workspaces. One example of how bad it is now, try to open Geany in two different workspaces, and see what happens - they interfere with each other.

I know there's also the option of logging in to Linux as a different user, but this is more headache that it's worth (in my situation).

Ideally, I would like to have the following scenario:

  1. Open Firefox for my personal email, as well work. I prefer using webmail. Added bonus - can you add an option to Firefox (or any other browser) to alert you when you receive an email, and maybe read outloud the name of the sender?
  2. I use Geany for my text editor. It has the concept of "Projects" - but it goes really bad if I try to open Geany in two separate workspaces. Ideally, Geany should open the same project as the name of the workspace. For example, if I have a client name like "Company ABC" and a Workspace "Company ABC", Geany should open that project.
  3. I use FileZilla for FTP. In the same way as above, I would like FileZilla to open a bookmark with the name as the workspace "Company ABC".
  4. I use Chromium to test my work... it would be nice if there were separate bookmarks for each workspace.

If the above scenario is not clear, just put yourself in the situation of working from home for many different clients... what is the best way for the computer to help you manage all these clients with different projects, URLs, passwords, etc...? My suggestion is the customizable workspace. Thanks.

What it will take

The main thing is allowing more customization for workspaces.

How we know we succeeded

If you can customize a workspace, and then all other programs like Geany, FileZilla, Chromium, etc, respond to each workspace properly.

I am willing to put work into this

I'm not a KDS programmer. But if there are any beginners classes, I would try to learn. I can program with PHP. And am in the process of learning Python.

I am interested

Each goal needs Champions. If no-one is found it will unfortunately not be eligible for voting.

This sounds a lot like changing Plasma's Activities feature to what I proposed in https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kactivitymanagerd/-/issues/6#note_507027. Obviously I'm in agreement about this, but It might be too narrow a scope to be a good KDE Goal.

Yup, this sounds too much like a feature request. If this was spun into a goal, it would sound a lot like the small businesses goal anyway
