Organise SoK for Promo
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In this task we will work on deciding on projects that could benefit both SoK candidates (by giving them good experience and expanding their knowledge) and Promo, by getting someone to complete tasks that, while not immediately essential, would greatly facilitate our work in the future.

TODO

  • Brainstorm possible tasks
    • Graphic assets (especially Katies and Konquis, in 2 and 3D)
    • "What's new" informer widget
    • Migrate dot.kde.org to ... Hugo?
    • Further development of Kockatoo
    • ...
  • Assign mentors
  • Write proposals

I would like to see more Katie and Konqi. To be concrete, I would like to see mainly more Katies, in different scenarios and with less sexist clothes:

  • Katie with plants for KDE eco promotion
  • Katie working with graphs with LabPlot and Cantor
  • ...

Also, I would like to have fully-rigged Blender models of both Katie and Konqi so we could create different scenarios for videos or static images.

At one point about a month ago I proposed for Plasma to have a way to notify the user of new features and point them to release announcements, thus helping Promo to reach new people. After some discussion, we seem to have settled on a simple notification before and after Plasma gets updated to a major version. There hasn't been a lot of activity on that idea, probably because KDE Devs are already swamped in work. With that in mind, I think it would be a nice idea to make it a SoK project. It seems to be a simple project and will benefit both Plasma users (as a way to teach them about new features) and Promo. Here's the discussion: https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/issues/24

I'm already going to be a mentor for that sound design project I've been planning for soooooo long. Since I'm already doing that, I believe I can also help with this task if we also find a developer for the technical/programming mentoring.

Would this be a notification integrated into the desktop, @Guilhermems ?

Exactly!

Interesting. So would this be something that is triggered, say, after the user runs the Discover updates?

The notification would appear in two situations:

  1. When you check for updates and there's a new major Plasma version for download:

This would be helpful to inform the user about new features they can expect, so they can make up their minds about updating or not.

  1. After said update occurs:

This would work as a sort of tutorial for introducing users to all the new features available after the update.

On both cases, the idea is to simply open a link to the announcement page.

Implications for Promo:

Positive:

  • More visibility to release announcements: hundreds of thousands of users that previously didn't read or didn't know that KDE published content on the internet will now be exposed to release announcements and could also become interested in reading more blog posts.
  • if you add links to KDE social media on the announcement people might be tempted to follow KDE for more news
  • If the release video gets embedded into the announcement people might watch it and follow KDE's YouTube channel
  • If people start following and reading more about KDE news they can become interested in the organization and start contributing. This will also increase the amount of time people get exposed to KDE and thus will strengthen KDE's mind share.

Negative:

  • The announcement will need to be available the day the update hits the repos. This won't be a problem for most distros since they don't update Plasma the same day as it gets released, but it could be a problem for KDE Neon if it can't be published in time.
  • This is still something that needs to be discussed by the devs, but if the original idea is followed, we will need a webpage link which can be hardcoded into Plasma that will always redirect to the latest release announcement. That means that link will need to be manually updated by Promo before every major version hits, unless this could be automated somehow.
  • This hasn't been discussed yet, but we need to discuss how localization would be handled. Maybe initially only showing the notification for English speaking users could work.
