Demonstrate Android convergence
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

The promo material for T14636: W11 Launch Campaign should demonstrate how Android apps, devices, and services are integrated inside a Plasma session. This includes several related items:

  • Plasma Mobile apps working and looking good on the desktop
  • How KDE Connect surpasses Microsoft's "Your Phone" in every way
  • Anbox running Android-exclusive apps on the PC.

Our user experience with the first two items already beats Windows 11. Using Anbox is not as polished as the new Microsoft Store solution. We could have more confidence and achieve feature parity by offering a pre-configured F-Droid store on KDE Neon.

We have yet to test the Microsoft Store integration, but based on the demos, I fear that in a direct comparison the current version of Anbox may come out as harder to set up and less intuitive.

Stuff we can do on a distro level:

  • Link anbox appimages to the system ones to make sure that android apps pop up into kickoff
  • When anbox is installed, expose fdroid repository to Discover, and make the install button download the apk and sideload it into anbox
  • Ship with anbox by default so that people will open up Discover and just see android apps as well, maybe in a different section of the store, like for addons

Stuff we can do for kdeconnect:

  • Add an option such that - when usb debugging is enabled - pressing a button in kdeconnect will open up scrcpy. Possibly over wifi as well, that depends if kdeconnect can run the equivalent of adb tcpip 5555 as an app
