Bring back tabbed windows (like from Plasma 4)

Description

As a user, I was first exposed to this functionality with Windows 10 "Sets".
I switched to using Windows 10 preview releases so that I could use this functionality. Unfortunately, Microsoft decided not to move forward with this feature, and it never released on Windows 10 or 11.

I later discovered that KDE Plasma 4 had this feature, but that it never made it into Plasma 5 (which was the latest version at the time of Windows 10's Sets beta). I have been hoping to see this feature return from Plasma 4 ever since.

But it seems I'm not the only one that wants this feature.

  1. I created this question in the Unix & Linux Stack Exchange
  2. and I found this question on Reddit, specifically about Plasma 4

What it will take

This effort would be engineering-heavy, and probably primarily consist of changes to KWin. Though I don't have any engineering experience with KDE.

How we know we succeeded
Since this is essentially a feature request, the only marker of success is that the feature is available to end users.

Champions

We want this year's goals to be driven by small teams. Who will be this goals champions if selected? If you don't yet have a small team please mention what you are looking for still so others can step up. We believe a goal generally needs someone who can carry the vision of the goal forward, someone who can technically steer it and someone to promote it.

The team is:

  • XXX
  • XXX

If you're not interesting in working on this @julianbraha then I'm afraid it can't be a goal since no one else has stepped up. Either way, this is more of a feature request than a goal for all of KDE to follow.

Hi @julianbraha, indeed as stated before this seems to be more fit for a feature request than a KDE Goal. You can open a feature request here: https://bugs.kde.org/

Thanks for your contribution

Hello,

Please note that the deadline just around the corner on Wednesday, so now is the time to finalize your proposal. Remember that proposals without a Goal Champion will be disqualified, so this step is crucial to ensure your idea moves forward. If you need help or have any questions, please let me know.

If you’re unable to finish your proposal but still want to participate, consider contributing to other ongoing tasks.

Thank you for submitting your ideas for the KDE Goals!
