Kdenlive showreel
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

There is a very engaging opportunity to promote "media software". (At least for me) Showreels are one of the most memorable ads. A showreel for Kdenlive would be a great way to add a social proof component to the website and social media, and would also be useful for the fundraising campaign.

TODO

  • Find/Collect artists and artworks to contact if they'd be interested in participating.
  • Put out a call for content on social media
  • Assort and organise the footage
  • Cut the showreel

Projects

List of notable existing projects cut and edited with Kdenlive

Some well-done showreels IMO:
(I know the content is very different, sending them for the editing and pacing):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg6DHIdfW-A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wgyzl2gV5VI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0siU8hUJsA

Do we know of / have a list of any notable projects, or at least cool looking projects that used Kdenlive? Looking at some of the current material on the Kdenlive website, it's really heavy on details (although slightly out of date with current release), but not so much on showing what people have done with the software.

Speaking as a filmmaker, seeing what folks have done with the software is a bit more impactful. When I was young and in college, seeing articles in outlets like "NoFilmSchool" about how Academy winning films at the time were being cut in Adobe instead of AVID (which was a huge shock at the time, even in 2017/2018) given how cheap Adobe was compared to AVID, made me stick with Adobe vs coughing up the money for AVID books/licenses.

Maybe it'd be worth putting out a call on social media for folks to submit their works created in Kdenlive to be featured on the site/our socials, and if we really like the work, hopping on a zoom call and having them walk us through their editing timeline and process with Kdenlive and uploading it to the KDE youtube.

To bring it back to the main post, all this could also serve as a way to gather material for a proper showreel. Could also spin this into a larger Kdenlive/Krita marketing strat project.

We know of projects that use Kdenlive, but we don't have a list. I think compiling a list is a good idea.

We did this once. There were some good things, but most stuff was not very inspiring: lots of footage of gaming and holidays. Nothing wrong with that, of course! But not the stuff we were looking for. Which doesn't mean we should not do it again! Another good idea.

Yes, let's do it.

Some quick and dirty options for copy text for social media posts, let me know if any of these work:

1: Have you made something cool with Kdenlive? We want to see it! Post cool stuff you’ve made in Kdenlive below.

2: Want to get featured on the Kdenlive website, and the showreel? We want to see what you’ve made! Post your projects below for a chance to get featured.

3: Are you a creator that uses Kdenlive? We want to see your work! Post your projects below, or with the hashtag #MadewithKdenlive, some interesting projects may even be featured in Kdenlive marketing.

4: Do you use Kdenlive? We want to see your work. Post your projects below, and why you chose Kdenlive.

5: Are you a Kdenlive user? We want to see your cool projects. Share what you’ve made below, you may even get featured.

I feel like that with most of these we're going to get yet again 14-year olds sending in their angry-pidgeons speedruns (or whatever the f kids play these days) or people submitting videos of their frigging cats 😬. Let's up the ante, eh? And we don't only need the footage, we need over-the-shoulder footage of them editing, with Kdenlive clearly visible. This image

Stuff like this:

or even this:

(although it would be better to see the editor).

Edit: Oh! Another one:

How can we avoid this 👆, I wonder?

  • Select forums (maybe r/filmmakers on Reddit, seek out filmmaker on Mastodon Facebook, etc.. and post for them)
  • Use tailored hashtags carefully
  • Change the wording to include things like "Professional" (ugh!), "Shorts", "Music videos", "Ads", "TV Programs"...
  • ....

"""
Are you a #filmmaker? Are you using @kdenlive? Let us know about your project!

Regardless of whether you are working on making shorts with you mates, features for a festivals, corporate ads, online or TV shows, or music videos, we want to see and promote them all!

We are building a showreel made up of clips from projects edited with Kdenlive. We aim to encourage more artists to move beyond expensive, closed systems to a free way of making movies.

Help us help the next generation of filmmakers!

Let's do it! We used to have a showreel section in the website but we removed mostly because it didn't get many new content. Also in the old forum we used to have a showreel section, so we can post this in the new one as well.

This also reminded me to bring back #timelinetuesday - where people would share screenshots of their timelines.

Gonna post now

Posted in some Discord, Matrix and Telegram groups linking to a forum post.

Also in our socials on Reddit, Mastodon/Lemmy and BlueSky.

I agree,
we should 'overshoot' the professional parts,
because even a beginner hobbyist user gets a better impression if it's showing technically (also) high-quality work

I realise that a lot of the links to entities I am posting are in the US, but let us keep our eyes open for other markets. Bollywood, for example. The problem I have is the language barrier, but if we could get someone on the project who knew about that market, it would be great. I am sure places like Brazil have their own "Hollywood". Let's hear about that too.

Suggest in the comments or just add directly to the lists in the description of the task.

Wow a lot happened while I was asleep over here in the US haha. Can we get the main KDE bluesky account to repost the Kdenlive post we put out? Would it be worth writing up a blog post for Planet KDE as well? I can get some rough copy written up for that as well (I like the main post that came out today btw, sorry if my copy was a bit too vague!).

Do we have some community members who we could ping for some quick translation and then post on the appropriate socials?

I don't know. There are many Indian contributors in KDE. Whether any of them have any kind of connection with the Indian movie industry (which is huuuuuuge), no idea. Part of the task should be finding that out, right?

Taking a look through some of the responses we've gotten, one that's really stood out to me is these guys: www.youtube.com/@kelpandfern

According to their comment they've been using Kdenlive for 6 years now to make all these feature length ultra running documentaries. https://www.reddit.com/r/kdenlive/comments/1i8z3s5/let_us_know_about_your_project/m8xwfjv/

I was doing some digging and saw on their Ko-Fi they even posted a screenshot of one of their more recent documentaries

I think it might be worth while pinging them and asking for some screen recordings of their editing timelines or something for the showreel? I'll even personally drop them a few bucks on Ko-Fi for their time. Additionally if we want to set up a "Made with Kdenlive" to show off some of the best projects we can find made with Kdenlive, I'd certainly say that at the moment this team are candidates.

I'll keep looking through submissions and see what else looks particularly interesting.

Pinged them. Good catch.
