Description

We want to show people a good summary of KDE's history including its biggest milestones and achievements.

What needs to happen:

  • collect additional content for the first 20 years
  • collect new content for the last 5 years
  • update the website
  • promote it

The repository to edit is here: https://invent.kde.org/websites/timeline-kde-org

I think we want to be a bit selective about what we add to the timeline. So I think we don't want to put in every release etc. And especially also put in important milestones that are not releases.

As for the developer of the original timeline code: no we took that from something that was developed by Molly for Wikimedia: https://github.com/molly/wikimedia-timeline

We can score the dot, Nate's blog, the Planet and our social media in search of highlights that will be intelligible to a wide audience.

The timeline currently goes up to 2018. The highlight for that year, the Purism deal, didn't pan out, so we may want to get rid of that and think about highlights for years from 2017 and 2021

Here are some suggestions:

  • 2017
    • Kirigami, KDE's Framework for convergent applications, introduced
  • 2018
    • Handshake Foundation donates USD 300,000 to KDE
    • Debian Joins KDE's Advisory Board
    • The Pineapple Fund donates USD 200,000 to KDE
    • Slimbook launches KDE Slimbook 2
    • Falkon becomes a KDE project
  • 2019
    • KDE adopts Matrix for instant messaging
    • KDE adopts GitLab as an online development platform
    • The German Federal Office for Information Security approves Gpg4KDE and Gpg4win for the transmission and processing of national classified information
    • KDE elects new Board
    • KDE sets new Goals: Consistency, Wayland and All About the Apps
    • Haute Couture Enioka becomes KDE Patron
    • First KDE-GNOME jointly-organised LAS held in Barcelona
  • 2020
    • MyGNUHealth becomes a KDE project
    • Plasma Big Screen, a Plasma environment for your Smart TV, is launched
    • Slimbook launches KDE Slimbook 3, running a Ryzen processor
    • Akademy is successfully held online for the first time
    • PinePhone KDE Edition is launched
    • GCompris celebrates its 20th Anniversary and is deployed in thousands of schools in Kerala, India
  • 2021
    • The Year of the Patrons: Slimbook, Pine64 and Tuxedo become a KDE patrons
    • Valve chooses Plasma for their handheld console, the Steam Deck

Thanks for clarification on the Purism thing.

So should all of the KDE Goal updates go on the timeline?

I'd certainly add all the hardware launches, MyGNUHealth, Gitlab, Matrix. Plasma Big Screen I'm less sure of. It's still very much pre-release, is it not?

There's some additional Kerala news I'd also suggest as major news for KDE adoption:

  • 2019
    • Janayugom newspaper offices switch to Plasma and full FOSS workflow
  • 2020
    • Kerala deploys KDE-based KITE Linux distribution in schools across the state
