Proposal: An intelligent KDE
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

macOS, Windows, and now Deepin 20 have an intelligent assistant. I think it's time for KDE Plasma to start getting smart.

Idea:

Create a virtual assistant for KDE which would occupy a new widget on the panel. As well as this, we can expand KF5 to include capabilities for voice recognition, natural language parsing, and more.
The KDE assistant will, just as the rest of the desktop, guarantee people freedom and privacy, meaning it will be the first desktop AI which won't send any of your input to an external company or server for parsing.
For a name, we could call it KonquI (KDE Intelligence).

There's already Mycroft that Plasma is collaborating with. I'm not sure it's necessary to have it by default.

yeah, there's no reason to create another one instead of just improving mycroft

OK, we could use Mycroft. I agree that you shouldn't try to reinvent the wheel. ;) However, I really think we should make it integrated into Plasma somehow, with a panel widget.
Also, Mycroft doesn't satisfy a few requirements:

  • It sends your data to a server
  • It doesn't conform to the KDE Manifesto (it is served on Github)
  • It requires knowledge of how to use the Terminal and python, while most AI's are just for regular users who spend most of their time on a web browser.
  • I was thinking of an AI which receives keyboard focus, not one which you talk to.

I really think we should make an assistant for Plasma 6 which will be accessible by all users. It may not be something which the developers will ever use, but I think with one available by default or easy to get, Plasma will receive more users, because this is the sort of things which many users of Windows and macOS like.

Keep in mind that Mycroft already has a panel widget. Also, I have yet to see a single person that actually enjoys Siri on macOS or Cortana on Windows :P
Mycroft also supports keyboard focus rather than voice, can also read from krunner.

Ok, thank you for clarifying @niccolove . I'm sorry for cluttering up the phabricator.
