Glossary of Kubuntu Terms
- AA = Archive Admin, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArchiveAdministration
- Akademy = an annual contributors and users conference of the KDE community https://akademy.kde.org
- alioth = aloith or alioth.debian.org is the machine name of the Debian server where the Debian packaging VCS is kept. The git repositories can easily be browsed via the cgit web interface located at https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/
- backport = The process of preparing packages for older Kubuntu releases. The Kubuntu Development work flow is to start preparing packages for Kubuntu +1 (Development/Future release) and then 'backport' the packages for older releases which are still valid for updates (ie not EOL). Kubuntu Backports are uploaded to a special PPA - https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backport. It is worth noting Ubuntu also have a Ubuntu Backports repository, which should not be confused with the Kubuntu PPA
- BBB = Big Blue Button, is the name of the video conferencing service Kubuntu use for the Podcast, parties, Dojo, general meeting or anytime when it is beneficial to see and hear whilst working. The service has been donated to the project by bigbluebutton.org and for instructions for how to use it click here
- BKO = KDE Bug Tracker (https://bugs.kde.org/)
- BT = back trace, is a list of the function calls that are currently active in a thread. The usual way to inspect a backtrace of a program is to use an external debugger such as gdb. - bzr = Bazaar, a version control system that helps you track project history over time http://bazaar.canonical.com/en/
- depot = depot, the machine name for depot.kde.org, which is a server used to make available pre-release tarballs. This allows packaging teams to make a start on packaging a release before they are official released via download.kde.org. Users of depot will need to be granted access before use
- EOL = End of Life, the date which a Kubuntu release will no longer receive updates/security fixes. At this point anyone running a release which has reached EOL should up-grade as soon as possible. For more details, see Ubuntu EOL
- FTBFS = Failing to build from source, a term used to describe when a package fails to build on Launchpad and needs manual intervention
- git = Versioning system tool http://git-scm.com
- KA = Kubuntu Automation https://git.launchpad.net/ka
- KANG = Kubuntu Automation Next Generation https://git.launchpad.net/ka
- KC = Kubuntu Council, an elected body of six Kubuntu Members who manage and steer the Kubuntu community https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-council
- KCI = Kubuntu Continuous Integration http://kci.pangea.pub
- KFN = Unofficial Kubuntu Forum (http://kubuntuforum.net/)
- Launchpad = Launchpad (Ubuntu Project management software) https://launchpad.net
- LP = Launchpad (Ubuntu Project management software) https://launchpad.net
- MOTU = Master Of The Universe, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU
- MP = merge proposal https://dev.launchpad.net/UsingMergeProposals (known as a pull request on GitHub, but e.g. FreeBSD calls bug reports PRs, or problem reports, so that's confusing)
- PPA = Personal Package Archive managed by Launchpad (repository for packages) : https://userbase.kde.org/Kubuntu/Advanced#PPAs_.28Personal_Package_Archive.29
- pond = pond is the machine name of the new server which hosts our KCI system. It is accessible via the domain kci.pangea.pub
- QA = Quality Assurance http://qa.kubuntu.co.uk
- river = river was the machine name for the server that used to host the KCI system, it has since been moved to pond
- seed = defined desktop and other elements. Germinate turns them into the list of packages on the DVDs https://community.kde.org/Kubuntu/Links#Seeds
- shiny = shiny is the machine name for the Linode container used by @rikmills ( Rik Mills on Launchpad )
- SRU = Stable Release Updates
- upstream = Kubuntu upstream, while mainly referring to KDE, can also mean Ubuntu or Debian
- VCS = Version Control System, such as git, bzr etc
- VDG = Visual Design Group,
- weegie = weegie is the machine name for qa.kubuntu.co.uk and is used by the team to display reports and status pages on different things of interest
