During a discussion in the VDG group brought up the possibility of focusing more on Flatpaks, given some appreciated features it:
- Makes packaging easier
- Runtime management avoiding dependency issues
- Provides deduplication
On the other hand, doubts were raised regarding a strong usage of the alternative Snapcraft, as it is:
- More centralized
- Proprietary on the server-side
- Large packages sizes
- Security issues (with snapd's size and 24/7 running as root, as well as interfaces exposed to snaps)
There's already some collaboration between Red Hat / Flatpak team and KDE for shipping applications; this collaboration could be further improved to benefit both. Furthermore, there are few distributions using Flatpak as a central element for package managing, and KDE Neon could be a leader on that topic in future, possibly making it more appealing to users.
