=Description=
We should set Accessibility as a long-term goal. Our recent work was very UIX related. UIX and accessibility goes hand in hand.
Accessibility does not just describe Screenreader and Accessibility Toolkits. It also includes good focus and keyboard handling, and this aspect really needs improving.
Good keyboard and Focus handling is needed for a professional environment as well as power users. Everyone would profit from the work in this area.
The linux-a11y group would help with testing as we are very interested in having good accessible desktop interface and accessible applications.
It would also allow us to create automated UI testing using the Accessibility Toolkit as well.
Main areas could be
- improve Keyboard handling
- improve Focus handling
- Screenreader/ ATK integration/ fixes
- alternative input methods (Voice/ Braille/ Other languages/ OSK/ Dasher)
- magnification
- ...
=What it will take=
- I identified a list of issues we should work on. (see related links)
- We currently create a section for Accessibility in our HIG. This would be part of this goal as well
I will further evaluate what is needed and complete the list of issues step by step.
=How we know we succeeded=
This could be verified if the Desktop and Applications :
- could be used without mouse interaction
- a screenreader is able to read information as it should.
