Things like AppImageLauncher are really just workarounds because functionality like this has been missing natively from the system so far.

As per AppImage guidelines, please target the oldest still supported LTS release, which is trusty at this time. This will ensure that the resulting binary will run on all still-supported Ubuntu releases.

Is the crashing AppImage available for download? I'd like to have a look at it.
This may be part of a broader discussion, namely, how to handle application bundles (ROX AppDirs, Mac bundles, GNUstep bundles, AppImages) and applications that are not installed, but rather can "come and go" dynamically.
