About consistency of tabs accross applications, GNOME developers wrote new tab widgets from the ground up to replace all the different tabs they have accross their own applications:

I find the contextual help quite nice but I don’t see how beginners are actually supposed to use this when experienced users like me (20 years of computers/10 years of Linux) didn’t even know it worked.

I see that some people feel strongly about keeping this feature, but it adds very little value to the user right now. I think it should be improved so it’s more useful and discoverable, or removed.

Is this thing still being worked on? This was looking great, with nice ideas.

Shouldn’t this be added to T10891?

I’m so happy that it has finally been merged! I wish I could express more often how glad I am of the work being done on KDE, but it would be quite annoying to spam every patch/bug report I care about. ^^

Several options were discussed here, and I have a few questions:

The current design seems amazing, how hard would it be to put it as an option? Even it may be better to use the notification system in the long run, accepting this patch or a modified version of it would be better than to wait for a long time still.

This hasn’t been merged. The option seem to already exist for all types of OSD in: Workspace → Workspace Behavior → General Behavior → «Display visual feedback for status change», though that’s a very vague and unclear option name.

I opened a bug but I didn’t have any answer so far.

Added an ifdef so that it could compile with older version of KIO.

@dfaure I don’t see how to do that, since there does not seem to have such ifdef in the actual codebase. However I can make set(KF5_MIN_VERSION "5.55.0") instead of 5.54.0 in the CMakeLists.txt.

FWIW, Breeze shadows can now be turned off entirely (System Settings → Application Style → Window Decorations → Breeze → Click on the little Settings button in the corner → Shadows → Size: None), so the only thing this really adds is opaque backgrounds.

The new patch remove declaration of preInitialize() too.
