KonqiDragon added a comment to T9041: New "Home" tab for Kickoff.

Shipit! :)

Of course, this looks nothing like Kickoff anymore. It looks more like a set of tweaks to SimpleMenu.

So again, should we basically abandon the idea of improving kickoff and focus on improving SimpleMenu and then ship it by default?

the second one is good, but let's use a real search field in the toolbar, not a fake invisible borderless one. :)
Also maybe the bottom bar with the power/session buttons should span the full width of the window.

Also, shall we maybe add a new task to discuss these proposed changes to SimpleMenu? Or are these proposals still for Kickoff?

I think, the search should be where the applications, in right.

I would move the search field back to the top and put the row of power/session buttons back at the bottom, now that there's no problem with a tab nar nearby to make the clicks risky.

at that point you might as well get rid of the tabs, and place the locations option somewhere else

Is a search of category?

Yeah I'd like if home was more simple like this, or at least have a option to activate and deactivate the "recent" ones.
Did a little change to Manuel's mockup.

Maybe add a categories by default?

That's basically the "All Apps" page. If the home page looks like that, then we don't need the "All Apps" page.

This does make some sense though. If we add favorites as the default category on the apps page, then we can use that as the home page. Recent apps could simply be another category there too. And I happen to know that the model supports showing recent documents in yet another category.

So maybe we should just do that.

btw, i'm uploading this from my phone, it might be a bit compressed

alternating stripey backgrounds colors are only used for multi-column lists, because they help you visually align the data for a particular item in the other columns. For single-column lists, we don't need to use alternating background colors.

also, should the tabs have the line over the text like the other mockups or over the text like D25334?

Like in D25334. Thanks!

I agree, and I also like SimpleMenu quite a bit. It seems that people are settling on having a the main page display list or grid of apps, with a category chooser to narrow down the set, and a subset of the power/session actions visible right there.

I would be quite in favor of simply using SimpleMenu instead, with a small number of tweaks to make it suitable as a general-purpose Kickoff replacement:

  • Use the sliding popups effect to show and hide
  • Scroll long grids rather than having discrete pages
  • Show favorite apps and recently-used apps and documents
  • Make the row of icons-only power/session buttons into a 2x2 grid with text beneath the icons

I actually started working on a fork of SimpleMenu with some of the above changes in an attempt to make something upstream friendly: https://cgit.kde.org/scratch/ngraham/supermenu.git/

But I kind of forgot about it and stopped work more than a year ago. :/

First of all, I think that the default Application Menu in Plasma is very wierd and uncomfortable.
I think we should look at the other aplication menus.
Plasma Default Application Menu:
I dont like this.

Simple Menu:
This is my favorite Application Menu, There's a Search, Categories (even "All"), Grid of Applications with big icons and Shotdown, Lock etc. buttons, it's all in one place :)

Windows 10 Menu:

Brand new Windows 10 Menu: (WIP)

Elementary OS Apps Menu:
It looks like Simple Menu for Plasma, but categories only on second button.

XFCE Menu:
It's simple and convenient, but it doesn't looks modern.

Linux Mint (Cinnamon) Menu:
Reminds me a XFCE Menu, but in the left have place for Favorites Applications and Shotdown.

Zorin OS Menu:

Deepin Menu:

You mean the lighter bottom?

Yes.

It's a bug of the blur effect. I talked to Vlad in the VDG chat about it, but it seemed that it didn't lead anywhere. I think that it's really important to fix it, it's quite ugly.

  • By the way, this is also about Breeze dark:

KonqiDragon added a comment to T11925: Breeze Desktop Theme Transparency.

Those screenshots look pretty good to me. I might prefer a liiiiiiitle bit less of the background showing through, like maybe only 0.25, not 0.3. But it looks good, I'll admit.

.25 (using the shadows from the other patch, btw):

But I would suggest that you try it yourself on an actual machine. The screenshots (unless you display them fullscreen, I guess) make the effect appear stronger than it actually is. If you go ahead and try even contrast=0.4 out, you will see that it's not that crazy at all, and really pretty. Also, if you don't want the background to show less, I think that could also be helped by having a stronger blur, which will make the blurred area look like they are simply a gradient opaque background rather than the background showing through. Right now I'm using the highest blur that the desktop effect setting allows me, but there should be a way to change the maximum value. Finally, it's also possible to lower the saturation desktop effect to avoid giving the idea of desktop effect showing through.

Also keep in mind that the text color is global. Last time I increased the darkness of the text, people complained that the contrast would be too stark for apps that have text over a white/off-white background, such as document readers. Now history has proven them wrong since I have not seen a single complaint about the change (to the contrary, I have received multiple comments to the effect that it was a positive change) since it was done almost two years ago IIRC, but it's something that will come up if we propose making the text pure black.

I think that the fact that users did not complain shows that's not a problem to make the text black. Alternatively, the text could made to something like #131416.

The contrast effect is user-configurable

Is it? I'm unable to change it via SySe, only by editing the desktop theme metadata file.

Oh, by the way, keep in mind that a .2 => .25 change is similiar to changing the transparency from 10% to 12.5%, which is just slightly noticeable. I'm more a fan of .3/.4, but most users won't even notice moving to .25.

I'd like to propose a very simple Since having an entire window at first boot could be annoying, what about a simple permanent notification? It's way less annoying to close than an entire window, but it would still be very noticeable to new users. The notification could have two buttons to open the installer or dismiss the notification (if the notification close button isn't enough).

macOS does this. IMO it's pretty annoying, but that might just be because of how many times I've had to get rid of them for the hundreds if not thousands of macOS systems I've set up in my lifetime. :p

KonqiDragon added a comment to T11925: Breeze Desktop Theme Transparency.

Uhm, I disagree with that :-/ I think that even with very low opacities but strong blurs, all the information (icons and taxt) are correctly displayed with no problem in legibility. Here's an example with small elements (notifications) and strong blur, which in theory should be quite similiar to tinting (but without saturation/hue/brightness adjustments). You can see the color based on the wallpaper but still get all the information.

Even on dark wallpapers:

Text legibility is between 11-16 as per contrast-ratio.com, so good at any fontsize. And this is almost double the transparency/tinting that I'm proposing, so it would be even less noticeable.

At this point I think we will not agree on this topic, so I'll let other people give their opinions.

KonqiDragon added a comment to D22359: Revert "[showdesktop][minimizeall] Reduce the maximum panel icon size".

Is there any way we can preserve the original goal of using a monochrome icon here for small sizes?

Yes, it is already done. Lower the panel icon size to 16 or 22 px.

That doesn't help the huge fraction of people who never touch the default settings though. What's especially silly IMO is that the default panel height is 36px, at which size everything with a colorful icon version gets the colorful version... but if you reduce the panel height just one tick to 34px, the icons get smaller and everything becomes monochrome and it all looks great.

I feel like we should either slightly reduce the default height of the panel to 34px, or change its icon sizing logic so that the threshold for everything turning colorful happens at some size that's greater than 36px.

Why the Notifications, Volume, Network, etc. icons are monochrome, but "Show desktop" and "Minimize all" icons is hard to make a monochrome?

Those are in the System Tray, which always shows monochrome icons. Show Desktop is a standalone widget, which has logic to switch its icon between monochrome and colorful icons depending on the size of the container that the icon is inside.

KonqiDragon added a comment to T11579: Unify navigation through sidebar categories/views.

@ngraham I hope I understand you correctly. Your problem is that the actual sidebar or the side view, which comes if you click on the sidebar, takes width as well ... and therefore you don't want to waste more width, right?

What do you think of modifying the condition:

horizontal: (windows.width - sidebar.width - sideview.width) >= windows.height
vertical: (windows.width - sidebar.width - sideview.width) < windows.height

This calculation would take into account the width problem and would show the vertical mode faster if there is not enough width.

Here is a first test run, although I just used 300px for "sidebar.width + sideview.width".

Obviously we should start settings min width and heights for the window ... sure you could also start and switch in some size to "icon only" ... but at some point, there should be a stop ... the application doesn't have to run in a 2px x 2px window.

How to make redesign of KDE Store if it is based on opendesktop.org? There you can only change the pictures.
Need to update share.krita.org too.

KonqiDragon added a comment to T11335: Update kphotoalbum website.

@KonqiDragon: Seems like you never used KPA (or thought about what you're writing here). It's not "old", it's actively developed and up-to-date. And it serves a complete different purpose than Gwenview. Gwenview is a viewer, KPA is a tagging and archiving program. Don't compare apples and oranges.

Why do KDE need to support the old KPhotoAlbum when we have a modern Gwenview? Let's just stop supporting KPhotoAlbum.

KonqiDragon added a comment to T11346: Welcome Screen refresh.

Here is a potential idea for how we can do this. I think the community competition might be a little ways off. When it comes time to implement this, we could do the news section first on the left side and leave the community stuff as-is. Once we get the community competitions going we can start working more on the updated welcome screen integration with it.

Let me know if there are any issues or things that we need to include.

This sounds like a potential sub-task to a larger discussion with the monthly art challenge stuff. We need to do a bit more discussion on what that is going to look like, or who is going to have time to manage it. There might be a task already for that, but I cannot find one at the moment.
