May be just easiest for Kubuntu to have it's own custom panel layout template. That could then be selected in our default setting, or by a user, without having to modify the plasma default with a script.

That update is currently stuck in -proposed pocket, so it may be some time before we see that on our iso.

Ok, lets see if this really works:
OK cool! Feel free to close this if the results of that discussion prove fruitful.
I pinged Jeremy Bicha (core -dev who did last nm upload/merge) on IRC earlier to see if this could or would go in. He is on middle US time I think, so may be early for a reply yet.
No worries, you're all good!

I guess a more pertinent issue here, is do we want to try replacing our very simple "put it top right no matter what" patch in 5.12, with a backported version of Kai's more adaptive change?
Change pushed to our kubuntu_unstable branch, which tracks KDE git master, and currently what will become 5.13
From our CI.
Not sure this really needs a task, as the next time our CI does a unstable branch build the current patch will fail to apply, so I will remove it there. That will then be there and ready in the packaging for any merge from unstable -> stable when 5.13 is.branched.

+1 from me on this one too. Looks good on a modern laptop.
I'm going to +1 Nate's change.

I'm not sure we'd want to disable this for existing users. Some might be using it, somehow (maybe it actually works for someone, I dunno). I would recommend only disabling it for new installs. That's generally what we do for changes to default settings.
I have an upstream patch that adds this: D10245: Add more default user locations to Places model/panel
Additionally to the config file we will need a kconfig update script for people upgrading existing systems.
But at the same time, please stick to "widely" used power save settings. As you said, 99% of our users don't use these so far, meaning they're barely tested and some settings causing system instability on certain hardware is not uncommon.

I agree, but regardless of the approach, users would still be able to change this. The proposed patch was to remove the code that made it get set up default; users would still be able to manually turn it on or do whatever they want.
A non-coder's perspective: please provide a config file rather than patching. Users can merely remove the config file if they don't like the change.
OK. I have added a paragraph to that link
I was instructed to install "sudo apt install libkf5.*-dev".
Duplicate of: https://phabricator.kde.org/T6216
As an alternative to patching, if we ship with a ~/.config/kwinrc file by default, we can add the following to it to turn this off:
I agree, I have never been able to get that working, and disable it as well. I just use touchpad gestures instead. Seems like a cool idea, if it actually worked.
Now that's service! :)
This patch is already cherry-picked and will land soon.

I do not mind trading performance for battery life, but a sane default is to turn off power savings when plugged in, especially assuming most users power down their laptops (or at least suspend them) nightly.
I just wanted to chime in with my +1 for installing/enabling the back-ends by default when you are satisfied with stability. It would really help new users, (and experienced users) with finding the latest versions of applications.
Yes please for double-click. This behavior, even though default upstream, is not standard behavior a normal user would expect, especially if they are coming form Windows. The setting is also not easy to find.
+1 from me! I've used TLP and PowerTOP --auto-tune for a long time without issues. These two, combined with some i915 module options, has my laptop down to <4.6W at 50% brightness.

Looks like this is fixed now. Awesome!
Magnificent. This page looks great!
Fantastic! Excellent job!

We need libindi 1.5
While we're at it, let's add an eighth item: T7986: Add an eighth item to the app list page on the slideshow
Perfect! Ship it!
I'm using the new official logo svg and HTML to scale it to the right size as the others. Does this look better?
Hi everybody. I am kubuntu/kde user since 2009 and the first thing I always change when having fresh install of kde/kubuntu is to change to slight RGB font hinting and it always looked way better then system default. And I have never encountered problems with it.
As a matter of fact, the breeze cursor theme has a spinning "hourglass" in its theme. I think using that would be what most people would expect in this situation.
@ricktimmis @adelsarto any update on the slides for this? I'm making fixes for the current design of the slideshow might not 100% behind a redesign unless we get someone with more HTML and CSS knowledge then I.
We would need to talk to reddit mods to get our own mods on there. I'm around on reddit a lot and can take one shift of it.
What's the status on this?
It could not be in QML as the installer slideshow uses HTML and CSS. The installer code is very complex so this would be difficult to do.
Thanks for the clarification, michaeltunnel. Totally onboard with this small change!

+1 lets do this
I have no clue (and never had) which is kicker and which is kickoff! So +1 for me for showing the name somewhere -- and also the description. The popups in the icon-only panel (pinned) do show this now.
A fairly trivial change. This makes more sense to do upstream so everyone benefits from it. I've submitted a patch targeting Dolphin 17.12.3: D10558: Also use standard keyboard shortcut for "show/hide hidden files"
Valorie this suggestion is for Ctrl+H not Alt+H.
F8 does seem needlessly obscure. However, alt+H now give "Help" which does seem logical.
