Big parts of it have already been implemented. Here is a screenshot that shows what Dolphin looked like when this task was started.

This looks amazing @ngraham !
Is it scheduled for implementation some time after Plasma 6? Like in Plasma 6.1 or whenever?
Is it being worked on?

I wonder if this thread has been moved somewhere and if there is any work to move in that direction? It does feel like combining the UI would make Activity features more discoverable and those mokcups look great!

Still thinking through this, I am asking around to see if we can propose a design that integrates everything properly. Stay tuned.

I personally think (if a user's personal opinion counts for anything...) that all of the Settings we have under "Configure Desktop and Wallpaper..." (see https://itsfoss.com/content/images/wordpress/2021/01/2-kde-neon-wallpaper.png - also includes the options on the other sections on the left pane)
should be available in a KCM under system settings.

If you want you can also look at the ones I tried to add here https://phabricator.kde.org/D18078
Andy and I are currently collecting a variety of wallpapers for each category. We're picking ones that demonstrate artistic depth and have good technical quality.

I think my main thing is I want to simplify a bit.

zamundaa suggested design is aligned with the direction we were aiming at
https://phabricator.kde.org/file/data/3ib6sdfnmmw7lh54mbhw/PHID-FILE-ieljnhcfvxlf6wkpmqge/mockup.pngFirst implementation step would be to separate the Config UI from plasmashell process i.e adding a DBus interface.
Sure, the main thing to understand is that not all sharpness is created equal.

We have time. Let's pick out the wallpapers one at a time and do testing on them thoroughly. I have access to every computer and monitor under the sun at my work so testing for different screens and resolutions won't be a problem.

All I'm saying is that it may (hard emphasis on may) be worth investing in these wallpapers if they'll be around for a while.

Perhaps if we absolutely decide one a specific image we can source the RAW file from the original creator. This would be ideal as I could edit the image with far more granularity.

Oh yeah, and our current default wallpaper is based on an image using the Unsplash license. Link.

Let's nail down this; how many wallpapers do we need? There are currently 13.
In T10220#291021, @heldaeus wrote:It seems that the Unsplash license is very similar to CC0 expect that Unsplash "does not include the right to compile photos from Unsplash to replicate a similar or competing service".
Their FAQ clarifies this. They give two examples:
Mass scraping or crawling images from Unsplash and using those photos to build a site just like Unsplash where your users could download, copy, modify, distribute or use photos originally found on Unsplash, for personal or commercial use.
Using Unsplash content to submit it as your own on any other photo sharing or stock photography website;
I wonder if this policy conflicts with Plasma's wallpaper download hub? I'm doubtful since it isn't trying to be "just like Unsplash" (though I have no clue how they're defining that) but we may need to contact them to make sure.

If possible have the wallpapers be cohesive, they can have different subjects and styles, but it's nice that there is a "flow" among them...
For example all of them have a subject in "focus"...
Or all of them use an obvious rule of thirds balance placement...
Something that when the user opens up the UI looks like a cooheseve set...
Nice, it's great to have a pro around!
Tips and opinions about wallpapers from a former photographer:
@pinheiro 's idea of determining 3 things we want the wallpaper to make you feel would be really useful here because of all the options
Just my 2 cents: we should avoid HDR-looking, oversaturated, overexposed stuff at all costs
With the Plasma 6 transition underway, it's time to revisit this. Unfortunately we never got the wallpaper cache feature for Plasma 5 that would have unblocked this work, but for Plasma 6, we're free to make breaking changes so now's a good time. And replacing wallpapers has become less breaking over time as well; at this point, if your wallpaper doesn't exist on disk, Plasma will now fall back to the default wallpaper, rather than an ugly black screen.
In Plasma Sprint 2023 we agreed we want to achieve this (https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/issues/89)

As described on https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=401088, this notification is triggering when it should not: during short bursts of high CPU load, instead of when a real issue is ongoing.

Just updated from Fedora 35 to Fedora 37, now I hear the bell sound everywhere.
libpipewire-module-x11-bell module of PipeWire is not packaged as a separate package, and there's no easy way to disable its auto-load (as far as I know, Pipewire configuration file does not allow drop-in configuration to disable module loading).

So over time we've started to add messages and warnings throughout System Settings that direct people to the KScreen scaling system.
- In the Fonts KCM, when you set the font higher than 14, a warning message appears telling you to use KScreen, with a button you can click to go there
- In the Icons KCM, in the dialog to change icon sizes, there's a message appears telling you to use KScreen to do scaling, with a button you can click to go there
We've decided to keep it in the Plasma schedule. Instead, for Plasma 6, plasma-framework is going to be merged into plasma-workspace, which will automatically fix the issue described in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345997.
In progress with https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-workspace/-/merge_requests/2189; no need to keep this open.
We've decided instead to alert distros to pre-install these repos, rather than consolidate them and make them mandatory. See https://community.kde.org/Distributions/Packaging_Recommendations.
This was fixed a while ago.

Nice. Could the same technique be applied for keyboardlayout applet?
Currently, it glows a bit on hover when showing a flag icon only. No such effect when in text label mode.

They look like already being developing a kind of QT global menu like the one proposed above.

I am confident that instead of this, the more simple iconography should be utilized. My grandmother has a seriously difficult time trying to understand the colourful iconography, whereas the doesn't when it is at 16 pixels (but then it is unpleasantly small) and the colourful iconography is able to adhere to the currently utilized .colors file, whereas colourful iconography is not.
