ksplashqml excessive CPU usage
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

ksplashqml seems to cause excessive CPU usage.

on VMs with a single core it takes a number of seconds before ksplash comes up after login. systemd-bootchart shows it causing excessive CPU use throughout its run finally scoring in as 4th highest cpu consumer (xorg > bootchart > greeter > ksplash > plasmashell > kwin > udevd). attaching more cores to the VM resolves the delay for me, the cpu use however remains. it could be simply software rendering in the VM that is causing the overhead.

@bshah also sees this happening on bare metal though, which would suggest it being a problem elsewhere. he also doesn't see it happening on his regular system, so it could be a problem in the bionic stack rather than plasma master.

investigation needed

Todo,

  • Test it on on the xenial based KDE Neon system to see if is strictly bionic regression?

With current xenial unstable this doesn't happen.
I also haven't actively noticed this on the bionic unstable (didn't check explicitly though as I have no working vm right now)

I don't see it being a problem in latest bionic either.

@bshah can you try if you can still reproduce it?

(cpu load is high during login, but that's expected. even with 2 cores login seems to finish fairly swiftly though)

bshah claimed this task.

I just tested it with latest bionic ISO and it seems to work so we can close this issue I believe.
