Add image preview to effects
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Create a script that will generate png's of effects using a source image to include them in the effects list
Or (maybe it's a crazy idea) we could also create some kind of colorful thumbnails containing the first Letter of the effect name, with color defined by a hash of effect name.
This would allow us to have almost unique color thumbs to make it easier to identify effects - like it is done in some email apps

Kube removes the preview, because it's useless to have a random color and a useless first letter. Group them would be a better way. Maybe have a gif preview of a transition or an icon like PowerPoint did it. I made some icons for libreoffice impress transitions and can support if needed.

Do you mean something like this:

Final Cut

OpenShot

Would it be easier to re-structure Split Compare to work on a selected frame? Right now an effect must be applied to use Split Compare, but the result is fairly useful to determine how the change will look. The behavior could be changed if an effect is selected but not added to the clip. Instead we could take the current frame and provide that Split Compare.

We discussed this topic during the sprint in November 2023. We will implement links to the documentation for each effect. We will continue to track this issue in the roadmap and/or on https://invent.kde.org
