FOSDEM 2025 - Post Mortem

What it is

FOSDEM is an event for Free Software developers traditionally held in Brussels at the first weekend of every February. Started in 2000 by Raphael Bauduin, its laissez-faire organisation (there are no registrations, you can just turn up) has helped it to grow immensely and the number of attendees easily reaches the thousands every year.

What they gave us

KDE participated in FOSDEM, talks from community members and a booth in the exhibition area. This year our booth was at Level 1 in AW Building.

What we did

Before the event
  • We worked with FOSDEM organisers to make sure we had a booth for KDE
  • We arranged material and stickers for the booth
  • We arranged to have community members loan us devices for the booth.
During the Event
  • We gave out stickers, KDE Eco Flyers, 5 Puzzles and around 40 Keychains
  • We answered questions
  • We showed Steamdeck, One Plus 6, RaspberryPi + OLED touch screen, Pinetab 2 and Pine Note
  • We sold 116 T-shirts and 50 Konquis on Saturday and Sunday for €25 donation ( €4,150 in total)
  • We collected donations (€306.20)
What went well
  • Attendance was good
  • Attendees liked the stickers
  • Stickers from different projects helped attendees associate them with KDE
  • Attendees were amazed to see the devices
  • The presence of different developers at the booth at different times helped in promoting KDE.
  • As AW Building was not that popular, we got to meet a lot of true fans of KDE
  • Card reader
  • Freewear merch and Transport cost was €1,949.62, Stickers Cost (for all the future events) was € 858.76 and Konqis (amigurumi) cost was €400
What went badly
  • We didn’t have enough T-shirts in Medium and Large, this year was different people did not want XXL and XL sizes. So 8 T-shirts were not sold.
  • AW Building is less popular than other buildings.
What we Learnt
  • KDE logo T-shirts were popular compared to Konqi. White T-shirts were the least favourite. Black and Grey were very popular. Long-sleeved T-shirts are expensive so we won't take them next year.
  • Ask Freewear to pack T-shirts individually. We had issues in finding sizes as all T-shirts were folded together.

Regarding the tablet for Krita, if Wayland support is not all there, I would not overthink it and just run Krita on a machine running X. The aim of the Krita workstation is to attract attendees with an interest in artistic and design topics so they start using Krita. The backend, i.e. Plasma, is secondary for this.

From what I can see, next time we can afford to rent a big monitor on a pole and still come out on top.

Well done everyone!

Well done everyone!

Yes, we can. If we can find someone who can deliver and pick up the screen from the venue.

Yes, we can. If we can find someone who can deliver and pick up the screen from the venue.

Usually that is done by the providers themselves.
