Description

It is currently difficult to find the right channel in riot because every room has as logo a K.

  • #kde-chat is not a Matrix room. it was disconnected from IRC and now use a native matrix bridge #kde-chat:tchncs.de directly.
  • [ x ] #kde-www is not a Matrix room.

Why a rainbow for kde-chat? Is that a temporary thing due to it being June, or is there some association rainbow <> chat that I miss?

Yes, it was added in June but probably will remains like this since everyone active in this channel wasn't against it.

No need for fixing #kde-chat anymore, the irc bridge was disconnected and instead use matrix instead: https://webchat.kde.org/#/room/#kde-chat:tchncs.de. This is very much better experience for everyone, thanks @cblack :)

Whilst the experience is currently definitely superior, I think we should still strive to solve that issue on the KDE side as well. It seems weird that we have our own homeserver but use the one from tchncs.de instead... Of course, there are technical obstacles blocking the way, but once these are resolved I would suggest going back to #kde-chat:kde.org.

One potential problem is that the IRC side limits the amount of connections allowed from a single IP to combat abuse. If a separate bridge is used, chances are that this one might hit limits at one point if it spawns an IRC connection per user.

So long term using the KDE one would be preferable for this as well, but I agree that it should be preferred in general, too.

@cblack @ognarb can we please stop bridging the channels without looping in relevant admins/ops? There's concerns regarding such solution in : https://phabricator.kde.org/T13287 and they are not solved yet.

sysadmin and i18n are unfortunately in a state where we don't have any admins so they can't currently be changed

Surely we're able to takeover the channel admin status because they're on the KDE.org homeserver?

duffus added a comment.Sep 7 2021, 8:35 AM

nope, unfortunately they are old channels

this is why the chaotic unplanned start of matrix for kde is a huge disaster that continually causes us problems
