USSG mirror changed paths
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

It looks like the USSG mirror messed something up, and all files previously on http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/kde/ are now on http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/kde/kde/, breaking our Mirrorbrain redirects. Either this changed very recently, or the rsync paths are still the same so "what files does the mirror have" still succeeds (otherwise Mirrorbrain would have noticed the files are gone and stopped redirecting there).

I suspect this is a mistake on their end (there's no double paths in any other thing they mirror), so rather than fix our HTTP path we should contact them to put the directory where it was. Disabling the mirror in the meantime may be a good idea though.

It's refusing rsync connections and asking a password for ftp. How the heck does scanning work?

I have now disabled the mirror.

I've sent them an email now inquiring about this. I suspect they're in the middle of a hardware changeover or something along those lines as:

  • FTP is no longer password protected
  • the kde/ folder is now completely empty on both FTP and HTTP
  • RSync is still unavailable

As we've had a poor response rate from mirror admin contact addresses in the past, i'm going to close this for now - if they get back to us we can fix up the entries on our side and re-enable them, otherwise their mirror can stay disabled (we always have the CDN in any case)

And my email bounced. Googling around it indicates that the home page of the USSG group an Indiana University was https://kb.iu.edu/d/bekf - so it seems this mirror is likely gone.
