The latest KDE Plasma releases, 5.13 and the upcoming 5.14,
need a newer libinput than is available in the official
FreeBSD ports tree. There is a branch plasma5-5.13
with the necessary updates applied, for users wishing to
use the latest Plasma releases from Area51.
The Qt ports have been updated to version 5.11.2. This continues
to be a "frankenQt" with an older QtWebEngine port.
The latest monthly version of KDE Frameworks is available
in the official FreeBSD ports tree.
The SDDM port has been updated to version 0.17_1, to
backport fixes from the 0.18 branch related to session-reuse.
Users are encouraged to upgrade, although the default configuration
in FreeBSD is not affected.
The first monthly bugfix release for KDE Applications 18.08
has landed
in the official ports tree. Users can update normally.
The august update to KDE Applications, including the packages
of extragear maintained by the KDE-FreeBSD team, has landed
in the official ports tree. Users can update normally.
The latest monthly version of KDE Frameworks is available
in the official FreeBSD ports tree.
The latest monthly version of KDE Frameworks is available
in the official FreeBSD ports tree.
Less than a week after their official release, the
latest monthly version of KDE Frameworks is available
in the official FreeBSD ports tree.
The latest update to KDE Applications -- a wide range
of productivity, home, office and entertainment applications --
has been committed to the official FreeBSD ports tree.
Look for KDE Applications 18.04.2 updates to be available
from packages as well in a few days time.
The long-, long-awaited up-to-date KDE Plasma Desktop
and all of the KDE Applications have landed in the
official ports tree.
The x11/kde5 metaport installs KDE Frameworks,
KDE Plasma Desktop, and KDE Applications (all of those
are metaports as well, do take a look at the configuration
options to get the applications you want).
The long-awaited QtWebEngine -- the Qt port of the Blink engine that
also powers the Chromium browser -- has landed in the official ports
tree. This completes the portfolio of Qt5 modules on FreeBSD,
and paves the way for browser- and application updates that
depend on a reasonably-modern web-rendering engine.
The first applications built on KDE Frameworks 5 are
beginning to arrive on FreeBSD. The Calligra suite
of office and productivity applications and Krita,
the painting application, have been updated to their
respective 3.0 releases.
Users may want to uninstall calligra and kdiagram
before building the newer version.
The latest release of KDE Frameworks 5.35 has been
added to the
The repository used by the KDE-FreeBSD team for preparing
KDE (related) ports has migrated to GitHub, alongside the XOrg@
and gnome@ ports trees. The first updates from that repository
have been integrated into the main ports tree, with CMake 3.8.2
and fixes for Qt4 on ARM leading the way.
Two parts of the KDE/FreeBSD initiative have migrated to other
homes this week. The website has largely moved to the KDE Community Wiki.
This will make it easier to keep the website up-to-date and
for incidental contributions by users.
The source repository for the unoffical KDE ports -- which is where they
are developed before being added to the main FreeBSD ports tree --
is now in github, alongside similar ports trees from xorg@ and
gnome@. This simplifies the workflow of contributing updates to
the KDE ports in the tree and unifies that workflow with the
official ports tree.
The official ports for KDE Frameworks 5 have been updated
to the latest release. Users of KDE Frameworks ports can update as usual.
The KDE ports affected by CVE-2017-8422, x11/kdelibs4 and devel/kf5-kauth, have been updated with the fix for the identity-spoofing bug. Users are advised to update the affected ports. The Oxygen icons which have colored the KDE4 desktop on FreeBSD
for a long time are updated regularly upstream. However, they
are no longer the Oxygen icons for KDE4, but for KDE Applications
with KDE Frameworks 5. This means that icon updates do not happen
for KDE4 from ports. The KDE-FreeBSD team has renamed the port of the Oxygen icons
from kde4-icons-oxygen to kf5-oxygen-icons5, and updated the
port with the latest upstream release. This is another small step
in preparing for KDE Applications. While the port is now named
"kf5-", it is not, in fact, based on Qt5 or KDE Frameworks 5,
and can be used in a KDE4 environment with no change. The KDE4
ports have been adjusted to use this newer version, even though
the mix of KDE4 and KDE Frameworks 5 looks a little strange.
Although KDE4 software -- based on kdelibs4 -- is no longer
actively developed upstream, KDE4 is the only complete version
of KDE software currently available from ports. It receives
occasional updates upstream, and therefore occasional updates
in FreeBSD. KDE4 has been updated to the latest workspace release,
4.11.22, and latest kdelibs release, 4.14.30.
KDE Frameworks 5 in ports have been update to the
latest
release from KDE.org, version 5.32. The ports infrastructure has been
updated to be ready for the current release of KDE Applications,
version 16.12.3. The latter are not yet available in official ports,
but they are in the unofficial ports tree in area51, in the plasma5/ branch. This update ensures that when the KDE Applications for KF5 land,
the infrastructure is ready for them.
The KDE-FreeBSD team is happy to announce the immediate availability
of Qt 5.7.1 and KDE Frameworks 5.31 in the official FreeBSD ports tree; check out FreshPorts for the latest ports news.
This release adds one new KDE Framework, Kirigami 2.
It also massages the Qt4 and Qt5 ports to live together more
harmoniously. In particular, it adds misc/qtchooser, which
allows developers and sysadmins to manage multiple concurrent Qt
installations. We advise users to consult the UPDATING entry for
20170218.
The KDE-FreeBSD team loves announcing that area51 is all up-to-date
with the latest software releases from the KDE community.
The unofficial ports tree
for KDE-FreeBSD now contains KDE Frameworks 5.31,
KDE Plasma Desktop 5.9.2 and
KDE Applications 16.12.
The official FreeBSD ports tree has been updated with this month's
KDE Frameworks release, version 5.30. New in this release on
the FreeBSD side is the inclusion of x11/kf5-kwayland, which
opens the door to Wayland-compatible applications using the
KDE Frameworks.
The KDE-FreeBSD team has updated the unofficial ports tree, area51,
with the latest release of KDE Plasma, 5.8.5.
This version is available from the unofficial ports tree for KDE-FreeBSD,
area51, in the plasma5/ branch.
The KDE-FreeBSD team is proud to introduce the
KDE Frameworks ports into the official FreeBSD ports tree.
The KDE Frameworks are 70 libraries that build on top of
Qt5 and provide lightweight, modular support for all kinds
of functionality for Qt5 applications. The KDE Frameworks
also serve as the platform on which KDE Plasma 5 and KDE Applications
are built.
This release includes all of the KDE Frameworks except
for kf5-wayland (because it requires Wayland, which isn't
in the ports tree yet) and kf5-bluez (because it doesn't make
sence on FreeBSD's Bluetooth stack).
The KDE-FreeBSD team is happy to announce that the
latest Qt LTS (Long-Term Support) version, Qt 5.6.2,
has been committed to the official FreeBSD ports tree.
This marks the next step towards importing KDE Frameworks 5
into the official tree.
Users of Qt5 ports can update as usual.
The latest KDE Frameworks release -- this month is 5.27 -- is available in the unofficial KDE-FreeBSD ports repository, area51. Users of the plasma5/ branch in that repository can update as usual. or from the bleeding-edge packages provided by the KDE-FreeBSD team.
The KDE community has published an LTS (long term support) release
of KDE Plasma 5.8.
This version is available from the unofficial ports tree for KDE-FreeBSD,
area51.
The unofficial ports tree for KDE-FreeBSD, area51,
continues to keep pace with upstream KDE releases.
This week, it has been updated with
Plasma 5.7.4
and
KDE Applications 16.08.1.
Users of the plasma5 branch of the area51 repository can update normally.
The unofficial ports tree for KDE-FreeBSD, area51,
has been updated with the newest release of
KDE Frameworks, version 5.25, and with the latest release of
KDE Applications, 16.08.0.
Users of the plasma5 branch of the area51 repository can update normally.
The unofficial ports tree for KDE-FreeBSD, area51,
has been updated with the newest releases of
KDE Plasma, version 5.7.3.
Users of the plasma5 branch of the area51 repository can update normally.
The unofficial ports for KDE-FreeBSD, area51,
have been updated with the newest releases from the KDE community:
KDE Frameworks 5.24.0,
KDE Plasma 5.7.1,
and KDE Applications 16.04.3.
All of these ports live in the plasma5 branch of the area51 repository.
Tobias Berner, long-time KDE-FreeBSD contributor, has been accepted
as a FreeBSD ports-committer. This means that the team of people
actively working on not just area51 ports, but also the official ports,
has expanded by one. This is expected to improve the speed at
which unofficial ports get turned into official ports.
The unofficial ports repository area51 has been updated with the latest release of KDE Plasma, 5.6.5. Users of the unofficial repository can simply build new packages with poudriere. There is no estimate yet on when these ports will end up in the official ports tree.
The unofficial ports repository area51 has been updated with KDE Frameworks 5.23.0 which were released today. The plasma5-branch now holds the latest Frameworks, and Plasma 5.6.4 and KDE Applications 16.04.1.
Recently a whole bunch of small fixes were made in the ports
maintained by the KDE-FreeBSD team. The kdehier and kdeprefix ports
have finally been retired. New Qt5 ports have been added for the
Qt examples, and Qt Designer has been updated.
The unofficial ports repository area51 has been updated with a number of KDE Frameworks 5 and related ports:
KDE Frameworks 5 has been updated to version 5.21.0, released April 9th. KDE Plasma 5 has been updated to 5.6.3, released April 19th. KDE Applications have been updated to the newly-released 16.04.
The latest version of CMake, 3.5.2, has been added to the official ports tree.
KDevelop has been updated in the official ports tree to the latest version, 4.7.3, released for KDE4.
DigiKam and related ports have been updated in the official ports tree to 4.14.0.
This is a huge leap, as we are moving from 4.2.0 (released in August 2014) to
4.14.0 (released in October 2015). Version 4.14.0 is the last KDE4-based
release, and 5.0.0 will be based on KDE Frameworks 5.
The regular bugfix release of Plasma 5.6.1 has been added to the unnoficial
ports tree in the area51 repository.
The plasma5-branch in the repository builds the most modern and up-to-date Plasma shell.
The regular bugfix release of Plasma 5.6.1 has been added to the unnoficial
ports tree in the area51 repository.
The plasma5-branch in the repository builds the most modern and up-to-date Plasma shell.
The latest version of digiKam
for KDE4 technology, digiKam 4.14, has been added to the
unofficial ports tree in area51. The trunk of that repository
reflects what is "up next" for merging into the official ports.
Just a day after the release of Plasma 5.6,
it has been added to the unofficial ports tree in the
area51 repository.
The plasma5-branch in the repository builds the most modern and up-to-date Plasma shell.
The KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 5 are now co-installable with KDE4 from official ports,
now that the installation of headers has been untangled (since March 16th).
Official ports have been updated to CMake 3.5.0.
This brings CMake completely up-to-date with the upstream
release.
Official ports have been updated with a new structure for KDE4 installation.
The header installation location for kdelibs4-based ports has changed to
include/kde4 instead of include (which
consequently causes several other ports to have their installation paths
changed too). The idea behind this is to reduce path conflicts between KDE4 ports and the
upcoming KDE Frameworks 5 ports that will be installed into include/KF5.
The Plasma 5.6 beta release
has been added to the area51 repository. This means that the plasma5-branch in area51 now builds and installs a beta.
Users can Update their plasma5-plasma port from the unnoficial
ports tree. Use r12023 for the Plasma 5.5.5 release.
The KDE4 ports in area51 have been updated
to KDE4 4.14.9. This does not match an official release, but updates kdelibs to the most recent released versions. Most KDE ports do not update and remain 4.14.3.
KDevelop has been updated to the latest version based on KDE4 libraries.
Users can update the trunk branch in the unofficial repository
to try these newer ports. Work is underway to merge this update with
the official ports tree.
Plasma 5.5.5
has been added to the area51 repository, keeping up with the monthly release cycle.
Users can Update their plasma5-plasma port from the unnoficial
ports tree.
The monthly release of KDE Frameworks has also arrived in area51.
Together with the newest KDE Frameworks ports,
KDE Applications to 15.12.2
and KDevelop 5.0 has been updated to beta2.
All these ports can be found in the unofficial ports tree in the plasma5 branch.
The Calligra suite has been updated to version 2.9.11 today. This is available in the unofficial ports repository area51, in trunk.
Hot on the heels of Qt 5.5.1 landing in the official ports tree,
Plasma 5.5.4
has been added to the area51 repository.
Users can Update their plasma5-plasma port from the unnoficial
ports tree.
In the official ports tree, Qt has been updated to Qt 5.5.1.
This is the culmination of months of porting effort, careful testing,
exp-runs and package-disentangling. Users of Qt5 on FreeBSD now
have the latest official Qt5 release available to them.
Users are advised to consult the UPDATING file, as some ports
have been split up.
Special thanks to Yuri Victorovich, who did an independent port of Qt 5.5.1
and whose work has been incorporated in this update.
Users of Qt4 are unaffected by this change.
The monthly release of KDE Frameworks has also arrived in area51.
Together with the newest KDE Frameworks ports,
Plasma has been updated to 5.5.3
and KDE Applications to 15.12.1.
All these ports can be found in the unofficial ports tree.
Many of the KDE-related ports in area51 have been updated once again.
The Calligra suite has been updated to version 2.9.10.
KDE Applications are version 15.12.0.
The Plasma desktop has updated to (the weekly release) Plasma 5.5.1.
All these ports can be found in the unofficial ports tree.
Just a day after their release by the KDE community, the KDE Frameworks 5 ports have been updated to the latest version, KDE Frameworks 5.17.0. These ports are intended for testing before eventually entering the official ports tree. These new ports are available in area51 in the plasma5 branch.
The Plasma 5 Desktop ports have been updated to the latest Plasma 5.5. This does not affect the KDE Frameworks or Applications in area51. These ports are intended for testing before eventually entering the official ports tree. These new ports are available in area51 in the plasma5 branch.
The KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 5 Desktop ports have been updated to the newly-released KDE Frameworks 5.16.0 and Plasma 5.4.3. There are also ports of the Applications 15.12 beta. These ports are intended for testing before eventually entering the official ports tree. These new ports are available in area51 in the plasma5 branch.
The KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 5 Desktop ports have been updated to the newly-released KDE Frameworks 5.15.0 and Plasma 5.4.2, following the official releases at the beginning of October. These ports are intended for testing before eventually entering the official ports tree. These new ports are available in area51 in the plasma5 branch.
The "bleeding edge" repository for KDE Frameworks 5 ports has been updated to the newly-released KDE Frameworks 5.14.0 and Plasma 5.4.1. These new ports are intended for testing before eventually entering the official ports tree, and have been built by the KDE-FreeBSD team on FreeBSD 9.3 x86, 10.2 amd64 and 11 amd64. These new ports are available in area51 in the plasma5 branch.
Work continues apace on the "bleeding edge" ports for the next generation of KDE Frameworks, Applications and the Plasma5 workspace. This is available through area51, the bleeding-edge development area for KDE/FreeBSD ports. Qt5 has been in the ports tree for a little over a year, and today the KDE/FreeBSD team is happy to present the latest version, Qt 5.4.1, alongside Qt 4.8.6. The KDE Community proudly announces the latest -- and also the last planned -- release of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.14 and KDE Applications and Platform 4.14.3. This version of Plasma Workspaces includes a fix for CVE-2014-8651. The KDE/FreeBSD team is proud to introduce the latest version of the KDevelop IDE, version 4.7.1 The KDE Community proudly announces the latest release of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.13 and KDE Applications and Platform 4.14.2. A fix for CVE-2014-0190 has been committed to the Qt4 and Qt5 ports. Users are advised to rebuild qt4-imageformats and qt5-gui. The KDE Community proudly announces the latest releases of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.9 and KDE Applications 4.12.5. The KDE Community proudly announces the latest releases of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.8 and KDE Applications 4.12.4. KDE/FreeBSD team is happy to present Qt5 in ports! We introduce Qt 5.2.1. The KDE Community proudly announces the latest releases of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.6 and KDE Applications 4.12.2. The Calligra suite has been updated to version 2.7.5. Please welcome KDE Telepathy 0.6.1 (net-im/kde-telepathy), the new KDE project aiming to integrate real time communication deeply into KDE Workspaces. You can find a comprehensive introduction on dot.kde.org. Today we committed an important update to the Calligra Suite, result of thousand of commits which provide new features, polishing of the user interaction and tons of bug fixes. For more information, read the official announcement. The KDE Community proudly announces the latest releases of Plasma Workspaces, Applications and Development Platform. Improved usability and performance, along with many visual refinements, help the Software Compilation make a further leap in quality. Read more on the official announcement. The KDevelop 4.4 release comes packed with new features, bug fixes and improved performance. Also, new in this release is a shiny welcome screen for improved usability and an easier entry into the KDevelop world. As usual, the official announcement is the best source for information. The last bugfix release in the 2.5 branch of Calligra was committed to the ports; it brings several improvements and thus we recommend everybody to update. The KDE/FreeBSD team presents KDE SC 4.9.5, featuring, among new features and a lot of bug fixes, the new game Pairs, and split ports in the kdemultimedia and kdenetwork modules, allowing you to choose what you really want to install. The KDE/FreeBSD team presents Qt 4.8.4, and QtCreator 2.6.1, which now ships with a QML designer. Updating is strongly encouraged. Yet another Calligra release hit the ports tree. This new version fixes some serious bugs introduced in the first two 2.5.* releases. More details can be found in the official announcement. Shortly after 2.5 announcement, here comes the first bugfix release. You'll find an overview of the most important fixes in the official announcement. The KDE/FreeBSD team is pleased to announce version 2.5 of Calligra, coming to the ports tree after a short testing period which showed it to be quite stable. For the productivity part of the suite (word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation program) the target user of version 2.5 is still the student or academic user. This version has a number of new features that will make it more suitable for these users. As usual, detailed release notes can be found in the official announcement. You're strongly invited to update, as this release also solves a security issue. Meanwhile, new translations were added: While waiting for the final release, the KDE/FreeBSD team invites you to test the release candidate of the Calligra Suite version 2.5 via the area51 repository: The official announcement can be found here: http://www.calligra.org/news/calligra-2-5-release-candidate. KDE office suite, Calligra, has been updated to its latest version, 2.4.3. You're all invited to upgrade, and to have a look at the release notes. Meanwhile, release 2.5.0 is approaching, with cool new features! The last update in the 4.8 series was just committed to ports. You might want to read the release announcement. Meanwhile, we were able to fix two serious bugs in Akonadi which were preventing KMail 2 and other Akonadi-enabled software from working properly. KDE-Pim 4.8.4 should now be safe to use. Happy updating! Just a quick update to let you know that tonight we updated our Qt version to 4.8.2. Upstream changelog can be found here: https://qt.gitorious.org/qt/qt/blobs/4.8/dist/changes-4.8.2. After a short incubation period, Calligra Suite has landed in the ports collection with his brand new 2.4.2 release. Users of KOffice should move on to this new suite, deinstalling any KOffice port and installing equivalent Calligra ones (as noted in UPDATING). To answer most people's question: future work on Calligra will indeed include splitting it into several ports featuring single applications. The long awaited KDE SC 4.8.3 was just committed to ports, along with Qt 4.8.1, Phonon 4.6.0, PyQt 4.9.1, and many more updates you shouldn't care about. What you should be aware of is that KDE-Pim was finally updated and put in sync with the Software Compilation. As UPDATING suggests, if you want to stick with 4.4.11.1, you can replace deskutils/kdepim4 with deskutils/kdepim44. While we wait for the ports feature freeze to be over, we invite you to test the upcoming updates in the KDE land:
plasma5/
branch of the
Area51 repository.
Users of the experimental ports repository can upate and
rebuild KDE Frameworks as usual.
Also, please welcome Calligra Author as the new member of the suite: it will support a writer in the process of creating an eBook from concept to publication.
The artistic applications of the Calligra Suite are the most mature ones and are already used by professional users everywhere.

Since Qt started using the raster graphics system engine by default (and the native one seems not to be an option anymore), you should add...
kern.ipc.shmmni=1024 kern.ipc.shmseg=1024
...to /boot/loader.conf.
Thanks to the contribution of Luca Pizzamiglio, Kdevelop was updated to 4.3.0 in area51, and you're free to test it:
$ svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51 # sh Tools/scripts/kdemerge -m /usr/ports # portmaster devel/kdevelop-kde4
If no problems are found, it will probably be committed when KDE SC 4.8.2 comes to the tree.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is pleased to announce KDE Software Compilation 4.7.4, which concludes the 4.7 series. We invite you to read the original announcement.
Have a nice upgrade!
We'd like to inform you all that area51 trunk is now featuring Qt 4.8. While it should be working (yet untested, feedback welcome), we suggest you not to test it along with KDE SC 4.7, as it won't work fine.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is pleased to announce the release of KDE Software Compilation 4.7.3 for FreeBSD. We invite you to read the original announcement.
Differently from the last update (from 4.6.5 to 4.7.2), this is an incremental, minor version update which should not require big interventions or cause big changes for users.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is pleased to announce the release of KDE Software Compilation 4.7.2 for FreeBSD. We invite you to read the original announcement.
A lot of effort was put into this and previous 4.7 releases both by the KDE and FreeBSD teams. Here's a list of some of the improvements:
Along with this update, also Qt and PyQt4 were updated, respectively to 4.7.4 and 4.8.5.
More than ever, we'd like to say thanks to all testers and contributors, who were very helpful during this long porting process.
We're happy to let you know that KDE SC 4.7.1 is ready for a public test.
You can get it via SVN checkout:
$ svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51 # sh Tools/scripts/kdemerge -a /usr/ports
If you want to also test KDE PIM 4.7.1, run (at this exact point):
# sh Tools/scripts/kdemerge -m /usr/ports
Alternatively, if you're on amd64, you can use precompiled packages:
# PACKAGEROOT=http://packages.FreeBSD.kde.org portmaster -P x11/kde4
Warning: if you’re using a recent -CURRENT (after libraries soversion bump), you'll need to adjust your libmap.conf to use those packages.
Please read carefully the UPDATING-area51 notes.
We'd like to say thanks to Li-Wen Hsu (lwhsu@) for hosting and syncing the packages.
What’s keeping KDE 4.7 still out of FreeBSD? Well, the high number of tarballs (and thus ports) in which it was split for this release. Actually they’re not too much, but they require a deep scan to update dependencies. We’ll probably be ready for a Call for tests in few days, and we would even like to provide test packages to make the process easier and get more feedback!
KDE PIM 4.7 will also be available, but it probably won’t be ready to be committed along with other ports.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is pleased to announce KDE Software Compilation 4.6.5. Read the original announcement and the changelog.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is pleased to announce KDE SC 4.6.4. Read the full announcement here.
We're pleased to announce the update to KDE Software Compilation 4.6.3. Read the full announcement here.
Special thanks to Raphael Kubo da Costa for his work on this update.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is pleased to announce April updates for KDE Software Compilation: 4.6.2, codename "Congrats". Read the full announcement here:
http://kde.org/announcements/announce-4.6.2.php.
Special thanks to Raphael Kubo da Costa who ported the release.
What a big set of updates the one committed today by kde@! We are pleased to announce:
Official KDE release announcement can be found here.
As always, we’d like to say thanks to all helpers and submitters. Writing a list would probably leave someone out, so drop an eye on our mailing list if you want their names.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is receiving assistance from PC-BSD again. During last months things have gone a bit slowly: the main problem was we missed a package build system. Luckily, miwi@ managed to find a solution with Kris Moore’s help, and now we’re back on full speed.
We’d like to say thanks to Kris Moore, Josh Paetzel, Dru Lavigne, the PC-BSD project and of course iXsystems for their generous donation of a test machine for KDE.
As you may know, we’ve had 4.6.0 in testing for about a month while the ports tree was in feature freeze. Now that it is open again, we are already dealing with 4.6.1 update, then we’re not going to commit 4.6.0 to ports just to replace it with 4.6.1 in few days. In addition to not having to build KDE SC twice (not all that fun), you won’t experience some youth problems which should have been fixed in the latest release.
As a side note, we’re starting work on Qt 4.7.2, which will soon come to ports.
Enjoy the wait! :)
The FreeBSD KDE Team is happy to let you know that KDE SC 4.6.0 has been released a few days ago, and the release is ready for a public test. Before you ask, no, we do not want to put KDE 4.6.0 in the ports tree before FreeBSD 8.2/7.4 is released.
What's new:
KDE SC 4.6.0 provides major updates to the KDE Plasma workspaces, KDE Applications and KDE Platform. Theses releases, version 4.6, provide many new features in each of KDE's three product lines. The official release notes for these releases can be found at http://kde.org/announcements/4.6.
You can get KDE SC 4.6 via SVN checkout:
$ svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51/PORTS $ svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51/PYQT $ svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51/KDE $ svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51/Tools
Then run:
# sh Tools/scripts/kdemerge -kmp /usr/ports
Please read carefully the UPDATING-area51 notes.
Happy updating!!
KDE SC ports have been updated to 4.4.5. See official announcement for details.
KDE SC ports have been updated to 4.4.4. See official announcement for details.
New ports:
astro/marble (split from misc/kdeedu4): Virtual globe and world atlas for KDE. graphics/kphotoalbum-kde4: Image viewer and organizer for KDE.
After a long delay due to ports freeze in preparation for FreeBSD 7.3 release, and then subsequent updates for X.Org and GNOME ports, the eagerly awaited KDE SC 4.4.3 with Qt 4.6.2 has been committed to ports! Besides, KOffice ports have been updated to 2.1.2 and PyQt4 to 4.7.3. We had to resurrect multimedia/phonon* ports and now they are installed by default instead of Qt 4 Phonon.
Please, read carefully /usr/ports/UPDATING before upgrading your ports!

A few days ago Max made KDE 4.1.3 ready for FreeBSD. We can't commit it to the ports tree because we are still on ports slush, but I'd like to invite you to test it from area51. Feedback is welcome, of course.
Warning:
to get KDE 4.1.3 use:
$ svn co https://kf.athame.co.uk/kde-FreeBSD/tags/kde_4_1to get KDE 4.1.3
In the next days we'll start our work with Qt 4.5 and KDE 4.2.
The official KDE 4.1.3 release notes can be found here:
http://kde.org/announcements/announce-4.1.3.php.
The KDE team released KDE 4.1.2 two days later than planned. We are in ports slush and can't update KDE until it has ended. If you can't wait to get KDE 4.1.2, you can now download it from our area51 repo. The full KDE changelog can be seen here:
http://www.kde.org/announcements/changelogs/changelog4_1_1to4_1_2.php.
We removed FAM support completely. This gives a bit more speed and the programs start faster. Thanks to Kris Moore (PC-BSD) who tested this patchset, we also removed the KDE debug modules.
Also, Hannes Hauswedell reported a tweak. He experienced high CPU usage by kded4 and slowdowns with Konqueror as file browser, so he recommends to radically lower the DirWatch rate of kded4 by adding the following to your $HOME/.kde4/share/config/kdedrc:
[DirWatch] PollInterval=60000
This is explained here.
So, if you want to get the ports, please read these instructions (note: you first need to update Qt to 4.4.2).
Yesterday Qt 4.4.2 was released. area51 is already updated, and I would like some testers before we commit it to the ports tree after the freeze.
You can find the changelog here:
http://trolltech.com/developer/resources/notes/changes/changes-4.4.2.
Note on area51:
you now need Subversion to checkout area51:
$ svn co https://kf.athame.co.uk/kde-FreeBSD/trunk/area51
Happy testing!
The KDE/FreeBSD repository 'area51' has now moved to a new server. Please see https://kf.athame.co.uk/access.php for more details.
The webpages here referring to the old location will be updated soon.
The KDE/FreeBSD team is proud to announce the release of KDE 4.1.1 for FreeBSD. The official KDE 4.1.1 release notes can be found at:
http://www.kde.org/announcements/changelogs/changelog4_1to4_1_1.php.
KDE community ships first translation and service release of the 4.1 free desktop, containing numerous bugfixes, performance improvements and translation updates.
Pretty much all applications have received the developers' attention, resulting in a long list of bugfixes and improvements. The most significant changes are:
New ports:
graphics/kcoloredit: KColorEdit is a palette files editor. It can be used for editing color palettes and for color choosing and naming. graphics/kgraphviewer: KGraphViewer is a GraphViz DOT graph viewer for KDE. The GraphViz programs are free software layout engines for graphs. KGraphViewer displays the graphs in a modern, user-friendly GUI with all the power of a well integrated KDE application. graphics/kiconedit: KIconEdit is designed to help create icons for KDE using the standard icon palette. graphics/skanlite: Skanlite is a simple image scanning application that does nothing more than scan and save images. Skanlite can open a save dialog for every image scanned or save the images immediately in a specified directory with auto-generated names and format. The user can also choose to show the scanned image before saving.
Hot on the heels of KDE 3.5.9, the KDE/FreeBSD team is proud to announce the release of KDE 3.5.10 for FreeBSD. The official KDE 3.5.10 release notes can be found at:
http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-3.5.10.php.
While not a very exciting release in terms of features, 3.5.10 brings a couple of nice bugfixes and translation updates to those who choose to stay with KDE 3.5. The fixes are thinly spread across KPDF with a number of crash fixes, KGPG and probably most interesting various fixes in kicker, KDE's panel:
The KDE/FreeBSD team is proud to announce the release of KDE 3.5.9 for FreeBSD. The official KDE 3.5.9 release notes can be found at:
http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-3.5.9.php.
After the KDE 4.1.0 import the team found time to make KDE 3.5.9 ready for the ports tree.
KDE 3.5.9 was released six months ago and 3.5.10 is coming soon. We are not sure we have time to get 3.5.10 for FreeBSD 7.1/6.4 release, but we would have minimum 3.5.9 for those people who prefer to stay with KDE 3.
Max has spent some time dragging KDE 3 into shape, and we would like to make it available for test. Max writes: "KDE 3.5.9 was released six months ago and 3.5.10 is coming soon. I'm not sure we have time to get 3.5.10 for FreeBSD 7.1/6.4 release, but we can do KDE 3.5.9.
KDE 3.5.9 is ready in area51 repo, it builds fine on tinderbox (7.0-RELEASE, i386). It will be nice to test it on other platforms and releases. If there is no problem we can update KDE 3 ports anytime."
area51 was switched to IPv6-only recently. If you have IPv6 connection, you can access area51 via anonymous CVS:
$ cvs -d:ext:anoncvs@orm.arved.priv.at:/home/kde-FreeBSD co area51
If you have no IPv6, you can get an area51 checkout snapshot here.
Packages are now available for KDE 4.1.0 on the FreeBSD FTP servers. Users who don't wish to build from source can now use these to quickly have a KDE 4.1.0 desktop.
On behalf of the FreeBSD KDE team, it is my great pleasure to announce that KDE 4 has been merged into the FreeBSD ports tree. The official KDE 4.1.0 release notes can be found at http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.1 and FreeBSD users should also refer to the KDE 4.1 on FreeBSD notes.
KDE 4.1.0 is now undergoing final testing in preparation for committing to ports. The repocopy from KDE 3 has been made, but users should not attempt to install the KDE 4.1.0 ports until a HEADS UP notification has been posted to the project mailing list and the ports mailing list.
Qt 4.4.1 has been committed to ports. New Qt 4 modules are available now: qt4-assistant-adp, qt4-phonon, qt4-phonon-gst, qt4-clucene, qt4-help, qt4-help-tools, qt4-webkit, qt4-xmlpatterns, qt4-xmlpatterns-tools.
A detailed list of all changes may be found at:
UPDATING:
20080805: AFFECTS: Users of devel/qt4 AUTHOR: kde@FreeBSD.org Qt 4 has been updated to 4.4.1. With this update several ports specific problems have been fixed. Qt 4 headers and libraries have been moved to include/qt4 and lib/qt4. bsd.qt.mk defines QT_INCDIR and QT_LIBDIR now, which could be used in Qt 4 dependent ports if required. Before you start the update of your ports, please force update of qmake4 and qt4-corelib ports: portmaster devel/qmake4 devel/qt4-corelib portupgrade -f devel/qmake4 devel/qt4-corelib
KDE 4.1.0 porting is progressing.
At the moment, the ports are ready for testing before they are committed to the FreeBSD ports tree. If you want to help test them to speed up the process, visit the FreeBSD wiki and provide feedback.
See a screenshot of the test packages in action.
KDE 3.5.8 has been committed to ports.
For more information about KDE 3.5.8, see the KDE 3.5.8 info page.
KDE 3.5.7 has been committed to ports.
UPDATING:
20070704: AFFECTS: users of x11/kdebase3 AUTHOR: kde@FreeBSD.org The media kioslave now mounts all filesystems that support charset conversion with charset conversion turned on, set to the locale from the user's environment (LANG). If you are using a customized kernel configuration, make sure all *_iconv kernel modules are available. At the time of writing, these are cd9660_iconv, udf_iconv, msdosfs_iconv and ntfs_iconv.
For more information about KDE 3.5.7, see the KDE 3.5.7 info page.
KOffice 1.6.3 has been committed to ports.
For more information, read the official announcement and the changelog.
KDE 3.5.6 has been committed to ports.
UPDATING:
20070313: AFFECTS: users of x11/kdebase3 AUTHOR: kde@FreeBSD.org The HAL option has been turned on by default and the fstabbackend patches which have kept the fstab backend for the media kioslave at the status quo of KDE 3.5.3 have been removed. This means that MOUNTING DEVICES THROUGH KDE WILL NO LONGER WORK WITHOUT HAL. Thus if you wish to use device icons or the media:/ view in Konqueror, make sure to turn on the HAL option in the x11/kdebase3 port and also read /usr/ports/UPDATING entry 20061219 and http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html#q19 for more information on using HAL.
For more information about KDE 3.5.6, see the KDE 3.5.6 info page.
KOffice 1.6.2 has been committed to ports.
For more information, read the official announcement and the changelog.
KDE 3.5.5 has been committed to ports.
UPDATING:
20061219: AFFECTS: users of x11/kdebase3 AUTHOR: kde@FreeBSD.org If you choose to enable the HAL backend for the media kioslave, you should enable D-Bus, HAL and PolicyKit during system startup. To do this, add the following lines to /etc/rc.conf: dbus_enable="YES" polkitd_enable="YES" hald_enable="YES" Notes / known problems about mounting devices in media:/ with HAL enabled: - Your user must be in group operator in order to be able to mount removable media. - Removable media drives (such as CD-ROM drives) *MUST NOT* be listed in /etc/fstab in order to be mountable. - If you mount a volume by double-clicking it, it may appear empty. Refresh the fileview in Konqueror to see the files. - Mounting floppies is currently not supported. You can still mount them in KDE if... - You have an fstab entry for your floppy pointing to a mountpoint owned by your user (i.e. somewhere in your homedir). - The vfs.usermount sysctl is set to 1. ...by creating a floppy device icon on your KDE desktop and selecting the above-mentioned fstab entry in the device dropdown list on the device tab. - Mounting volumes from fixed drives is prohibited for non-superusers by default.
