DESKTOP SUMMIT 2011 from 6 to 12 August in Berlin October 6th 2010

The Desktop Summit is a co-located event which features the yearly contributor conferences of the GNOME and KDE communities, GUADEC and Akademy. Next year the conference will take place from 6 to 12 August, 2011 in Berlin at the Humboldt University, Unter den Linden 6. The event will feature keynotes, talks, workshops and team building events. The Desktop Summit website is now online.

The GNOME and KDE communities develop the majority of Free Software desktop technology. Increasingly, they cooperate on underlying infrastructure. By holding their annual developer flagship events in the same location, the two projects will further foster collaboration and discussion between their developer communities. Moreover, KDE and GNOME aim to work more closely with the rest of the desktop and mobile open source community. The summit presents a unique opportunity for main actors to work together and improve the free and open source desktop for all.

"We are proud to be able to welcome the participants of the Desktop Summit 2011 to the capital region next year," says Almuth Nehring-Venus, Permanent Secretary for Economics, Technology and Women's Issues from the Berlin Senate. "I hope that the joint conference of the two largest Free Desktop projects GNOME and KDE will provide an additional boost for our Open Source/Open Standard initiative within the framework of Berlin's IT strategy and therefore also to further high-value jobs in our region."

At the Desktop Summit 2011, KDE and GNOME expect well over a thousand core contributors, prominent open source technology leaders, representatives from government, education and corporate backgrounds, and open source desktop engineers, usability experts and designers. Local and international IT industry are invited to learn about and join in developing the latest innovative desktop technology. The TSB Innovation Agency Berlin GmbH and the Berlin Senate are supporting the event locally.

The registration for the Desktop Summit will open on 1 February 2011 and a call for papers will be issued. Talk submissions will be due on 15th of March and on 15 April the conference program will be announced. Saturday 6 August kicks off three days of joint keynotes, talks and social events followed by four days of collaborative workshops. The conference officially ends on Friday, 12 August with a closing.

Thanks, Eva, for all the work you did for the e.V. in the last five years, and welcome, Klaas, to the new board.

KDAB becomes Patron of KDE July 3rd 2007 The KDE e.V. and KDAB are happy to announce continued collaboration on the Free Desktop by KDAB being the latest new Patron of KDE. KDAB is known for its high-quality software services. KDAB explains "KDE and KDAB have a very strong relationship that dates back to the beginning of the KDE project, with the KDAB CEO, Kalle Dalheimer, being one of the founders of the KDE project. Since then, KDAB has supported KDE consistently both with code and funding, especially for the past aKademies. We believe that a strong KDE community is good for all of us, and thus want to provide KDE e.V. with a stable and plannable stream of funding."
Sebastian Kügler of the KDE e.V. Board of Directors adds: "KDAB is one of the companies that understand their role in a Free Software community very well. KDAB is actively involved with making the KDE software the success it is and will be. Additionally, KDAB takes its contribution to KDE very seriously. This is shown by their thorough commitment to a stable, reliable and well-maintained codebase, and is stressed by their involvement in KDE as an organisation. KDAB serves as an example for excellent collaboration with other parts of the community. We're thrilled that we're able to manifest our collaboration also in this more formal way."

Mirko Boehm, KDE core developer and head of KDAB's Berlin office - and thus host of the recent KDEPIM and KOffice meetings - explains KDAB's involvement in the KDE community as follows: "KDAB employs numerous KDE developers, who work directly or indirectly on KDE in both their spare time and their work hours. In fact, we are a company mostly of KDE developers. 3 of the top ten committers to KDE are KDABians, according to ohloh.net, including David Faure, one of the major contributors to KDE's core. We are actively trying to increase the visibility of KDE through our customer contacts and look forward to promote the powerful KDE 4 platform in future projects."

Trolltech becomes first Corporate Patron of KDE February 27th 2007 Trolltech, the Norwegian company behind the Qt toolkit has become the second Patron of KDE. Trolltech itself should not need an introduction, since they have worked together with the KDE project since its inception ten years ago. Knut Irvin, the community manager for Trolltech points out that "KDE does an excellent job of making UNIX-based desktops easy to use. Trolltech gains from feedback, bug reports and the spread of Qt through the success of KDE".

Being a Patron of KDE is an ideal way to both support the KDE project and become a more active member of the KDE community. After the inaugural membership of Mark Shuttleworth, Trolltech is the first corporate Patron of KDE.

"Being a Patron of KDE should help KDE when organising developer gatherings and organising the voluntary effort done by thousands of developers", Irvin continues. Trolltech's involvement with KDE is widely-acknowledged, the company providing the Qt toolkit, a high performance, cross-platform developer framework which is distributed as Free Software under the terms of the GPL license.

Patrons of KDE may display the "Patron of KDE" logo on their website and any other material for as long as they are a Patron of KDE and will be listed on the KDE e.V. website, if they so wish. This is the highest level of membership available within KDE e.V., and will allow KDE e.V. to continue its work supporting and maintaining the structures of development.

Of course, aside from financial matters, sponsors of KDE are a vital part of the vibrant community outreach and relations scheme - feedback from all our supporters helps to shape our shared goals and future development.

KDE e.V. wishes to thank all its current supporters, and would like to invite all interested parties to help us continue to serve the KDE community. Sirius teams up with KDE December 12th 2006 In a move to promote the KDE desktop in the Enterprise, the UK's Open Source experts, Sirius Corporation, have become a Supporting Member of the KDE project. Mark Taylor, CEO, Sirius Corporation said: "KDE is a high-quality desktop that has always had a strong following in the Open Source community. By becoming a sponsor of the project, we now want to raise its profile in the Enterprise."

Sebastian Kügler of the KDE e.V. Board said: "KDE is happy to welcome Sirius as one of Europe's leading Open Source experts in the circuit of KDE's Supporting Members. For KDE, this agreement manifests the next natural step in the improvement of relationships between KDE as the leading Free Desktop and leaders in the Open Source industry."

KDE e.V. wishes to thank its current supporters, and would like to invite all interested parties to help us continue to serve the KDE community.
