Target Audience: KDE Accessibility Developers and general KDE Developers -

Length: 1 hour -

KDE is renowned for its technical excellence, but less so for its marketting acumen. In this presentation we will illuminate the basics of effective marketting in a way that is accessible to the average hacker. If you want to "get the word out" about your application or project in a way that generates excitement and produces positive results such as growing your user base and number of contributors, this is the presentation to attend!

Last year at aKademy I talked about how meta-programming concepts are used in KDE, presenting a compiler for generating XML parsers from schema descriptions. This year I would like to show the next level of XML based meta-programming using two examples.

The first example is KWSDL, a framework for automatically generating KDE bindings for web services from their WSDL description. There are several existing solutions for that, but KWSDL is the first native KDE solution.

The second example is a framework for generating graphical user interfaces from an XML schema deduced object model. This can be used for creating editors for XML data and could also be the base for automatic generation of simple user interfaces like configuration dialogs.

Both projects are fairly new code and aKademy 2005 will be the opportunity to present them to a broader audience for the first time. + +

----------------------

Cornelius Schumacher is a long-term KDE core developer. He mainly works on KDE PIM, but also is the author of KDE core technology like KConfig XT. Cornelius works as developer for SUSE at Nuernberg.

Tobias Koenig is KDE developer since 2001 and maintainer of KAddressBook and KSysGuard. When not hacking other parts of KDE PIM, he fixes bugs in kdelibs or tests new, funky ideas. Currently Tobias studies computer science at the TU Dresden.

"Note: this presentation can be merged with other porting-related talks, -

(I have such information from by Josef Splinner spillner@kde.org and Holger Shroeder holger-kde@holgis.net)"

KDElibs for win32, was originally started as Qt-KDE-Wrapper Project in april 2003. It's primary goal was to port Kexi to MS Windows platform. Core KDE libraries, KDE Styles, KMDI and KParts was ported. The goal has been achieved after four months, and while the project increasingly maturing, the next goal has been planned: to merge changes to main KDE source code repoository, achieved by september 2004. What is interesting, after many requests and discussions, Trolltech provided its next (4) Qt version under the GPL.

Currenty, development of KDElibs for win32 continues within the KDE project itself. Unlike some people expected, the project is either not a fork of KDE code base nor entire KDE Desktop's port to win32. The policy is to reuse and integrate existing rich KDE API with win32 features, so either developer can take advantage of powerfull KDE components and user can still rely on the familiarity with win32 environment. Both attributes are promocisng for KDE adoption by corporate users and ISVs.

We are discussing challenges for further development, like porting network features, and presenting existing contributions, like DCOP client/server support. Another topic is related to developing standarized packaging, software installers, and multiple compiler support.

Mobile Clients such as Personal Digital Assistants, Smartphones and Webpads are becoming more popular, powerful and less expensive. With technologies like UMTS, Bluetooth, WLAN, and in the future WiMax, it will be possible for a client to be always on-line. In my talk, I will focus on how these devices will evolve, what free and proprietary solutions exist and how their use could impact the development of future versions of KDE.

The main challenge in KDE4 besides Usability and Accesibility should be to provide the user with a consistant and integrated experience on the Desktop and its Mobile Client.

I will present potential use cases with varying degrees of integration and propose possible implementations. With KDE4 and technologies, like Interview, one will be able to slim down and split libraries into smaller parts and separate the graphical representation from the implementation. This will allow Mobile Clients to automatically be integrated into the Environment just as KDE applications are today on the Desktop.

Some potential use cases I will focus on:

Conclusion: One can not win the Desktop without providing solutions for Mobile Clients ;) + +
